Product Description

Product Description

The Manhattan Project (1942-1946) resulted in the development and detonation of the first nuclear weapons - and irrevocably changed the course of world events. Born out of a small research programme that began in 1939, the project would eventually employ more than 130,000 people and cost a total of nearly $2 billion - and it was operated under a shroud of deep secrecy. This authoritative book provides a complete and vivid history of the project and its legacy, from the widest array of perspectives and primary sources: secret documents, essays, articles, excerpts from histories, biographies, plays, novels, letters and oral histories.

1.0 out of 5 stars A bad collage of other peoples' work, 25 April 2008
By Morph It (Bushey) - See all my reviews
I'm halfway through the book and am trying to decide whether to waste any more time on it.
The book is an edited collection of other peoples' work. It is disjointed and the variety of styles does not make for an easy cover to cover read.
I'll look for another more coherent account.

5.0 out of 5 stars History at its most Enthralling, 30 Oct 2007
By NP Layton "Nick Layton" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A meticulous, remarkable book detailing how a group of the world's foremost thinkers achieved a terrifying goal. With extracts taken from a multitude of various sources of first hand accounts, novels and verbal histories, this is truly the definitive telling of man's ingenuity at its best, but for the result to cloud our history ever since.

At times the technical descriptions can become overwhelming, but these are short extracts which serve to remind us what an amazing feet of technical advancement that these people accomplished in such a short period of time.

The book is split in to chapters detailing the major milestones that even people with a brief knowledge of the historic period would recognise, which also helps to build tension as the unknowing protagonists believe they are in a race to develop the bomb before the Nazi's.

I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone in an effort to show what mankind are capable of in it finest hour and worst hour, it just so happens that these were minutes apart.
