Product Description

** Now shipping with a new and improved remote control ** The 8-day Programme Guide with Series Link makes it easy to find what you want to watch or record and the 320GB Hard Disk gives you up to 200 hours of recording capacity. Support for Accurate Recording ensures you'll never miss the start or end of a programme (requires broadcaster support) and the Plaza HDR-S keeps things organised for you by automatically grouping your recordings by series. You can pause, record and rewind live TV at the touch of a button and even watch a recording at the same time as recording two channels. If you want to record more the intelligent conflict resolution will try and find alternative times that one of the programmes is being transmitted and offer to record that instead. Connect by HDMI to a suitable TV and enjoy free HD channels with cinema-quality Dolby Digital Plus sound (when broadcast). Even standard channels look fantastic thanks to advanced up-conversion to HD. Create a list of your favourite channels and then easily find what you want to watch using the dedicated button on the remote to either show only those channels in the Programme Guide or cycle thru your favourite channels using the Channel Banner. If over 150 Freesat channels are not enough the Plaza HDR-S can automatically add hundreds more non-Freesat‡ channels. Combine them with freesat channels on your favourites list for true power viewing. * In order to enjoy its recording & live pause capabilities, both the LNB IN 1 and LNB IN 2 sockets at the back of the receiver must be connected to your dish. Programmes cannot be recorded with only one LNB input connected. † The Plaza HDR-S must be connected via Ethernet to a minimum actual broadband speed of 2Mbps for On Demand TV services. ‡ Non-Freesat channels are not listed in the Programme Guide.

This is my first Freesat box of any type so I can't make any comparisons, that said on its own merits this is a good piece of kit. It a very unobtrusive box - small, light and virtually silent with the sole light a subtle shade of red/blue (depending on mode), the set up was painless and quick with the integration of the non Freesat channels onto the favourites list very easy (having them all on the one list is definitely a plus point). Scrolling through the channels and accessing of EPG details is not as quick/slick as that of SKY. I don't know if that is down to the Freesat software or Manhattans implementation of same, I have noticed that downloading the programme guide data is slower than SKY when looking ahead. UPDATE (Nov 2013) while the updating is still leisurely the EPG reacts much quicker now, presumably an update at some point.

Picture and sound are first class the HD image is crisp while the upscaled SD picture is good if the source is in any way decent, the PVR aspect has so far been glitch free. Selection of programmes for recording is simple and locating them in the library quick and painless. I only have a single input so can't comment how well it works when recording and watching different channels. UPDATE - have fitted a second cable so now have fully dual input capability. Works just fine in record A/watch B, record A & B and record A & B while playing back from library modes

The remote is small and very light but has not posed any handling issues for me. The direction "sensitively" is greater than that of a SKY remote but its good enough not to harm usability. 320 GBs capacity will possibly be an issue for some but I'm not one for archiving every episode of long running series so 200 SD/80 HD hours storage is fine for me.

Bought this box when we moved house recently and cancelled our sky subscription. We factored in the outright cost of the box and realised it would pay for itself in 6 months. Box arrived and set up was really easy. It is easy to use too, although not as reliable as our previous Sky+. On a couple of occasions it has "stuck" on recording a programme and continued on for 3 days. The only way to stop it was to turn the power off. It has also "failed" to record a few programmes too. Overall, it is not as reliable as Sky but a good money saver long term I guess.

Bought this as i begrudged paying sky every month for tv. The freesat box is small, very quite, and does the job fine. However it's very slow. By this i mean, it's slow deleting items from your library, slow to navigate the EPG and slow to wake from standby (by this i mean while the blue light on the box comes on instantly, a signal doesn't reach the tv for up to 30sec or more meaning the tv sits there with its blank screen until it gets the signal). Also, occasionally the box freezes up for ~1 min, usually when changing channels or trying to do things too fast. I suspect a better (faster) processor would solve all these problems.

As for the actual UI and the EPG, this is very poor. It's not obvious what future shows your going to record. Occasionally your recording will not work and instead it's recorded your program at a different time/date/channel from the one you originally specified. im struggling to find out how to actually type in a channel number, without it trying to control my tv (which it doesn't do properly). The whole thing needs to be overhauled as its not intuitive at all.

If you want something that works for the time being, this is fine. But for the long term, i'd get something else. This box makes me wish i had sky+ again as they seemed to of got both the hardware and UI all correct.

The price is superb and facilities/functions and quality is on par with the best (I have owned 2 Humax Freesat boxes in the past). Picture quality is brilliant and you can certainly tell it is upscalling standard definition pictures. SD picture is much better than I got from a Virgin Media box and I would say that HD is noticeably better too! I was amazed at how small the box is and how silent it is in operation. Highly recommended.

The box was easy to set up and works very well. No problems recording programs. Need to fix up the two inputs so I can record one program while viewing another, but that's not a problem. Good machine, well worth the money.

Nice looking receiver, spoiled by bugs and poor reliability. We are on our second unit replaced under warranty by Manhattan. The First unit kept crashing and wiping our recording schedules, finally the last time it crashed it refused to budge from the set-up screen for new users.

The Replacement unit lasted a month or two, now it frequently refuses to change channel when on full screen TV, and on-demand frequently fails to work even though it has a perfectly healthy Ethernet cable plugged into it, and occasionally crashes requiring the power cable to be pulled (Why didn't you fit it with an on/off switch !?)

Such a shame because when it works, it works well, and Manhattan are , to their credit a helpful bunch.

Unfortunately the Manhattan Plaza HDR-S has left us wishing we'd paid that little bit extra for a Humax...
