I am surprised that this great album has not been seriously reviewed previously. I remember clearly attending the "album gig" way back in 2000. Regrettably guest trumpet star Conte Condoli died soon after the recording. In live performance he was replaced by Steve Fishwick. On this album, presumably the last recording of Conte Condoli, Conte plays beautifully on the six of the eleven tracks on which he is featured. The other five tracks are quartet recordings.
David Newton (p) plays in his relaxed but assured style throughout. Matt Miles and Steve Brown are superb. Leader Alan Barnes plays alto saxophone, his preferred instrument, on only four tracks. He plays baritone saxophone (I prefer him on baritone) on the others. He uses the baritone for Art Pepper's "The Trip", giving it quite a different effect to the alto used on the original by Art Pepper.

The selection of tunes includes tunes by well known jazz musicians: John Lewis (MJQ), Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Horace Silver and Billy Strayhorn. Others are well known songs, plus two from Alan himself, and one from Conte Condoli.

Nearly 70 minutes of first rate jazz by five first rate musicians.
