.".. a thoroughgoing exposition of the manga genre in text and pictures." -The New Yorker

"Buy this book. Read it." -The Comics Buyer's Guide

Product Description

Since first published in 1983, Manga! Manga!: The World of Japanese Comics has been the book to read for all those interested in Japanese comics. It is virtually the "bible" from which all studies and appreciation of manga begins. More than that, given the influence of Japanese manga on animation and on American-produced comics as well, Manga! Manga! provides the background against which these other arts can be understood. The book includes 96 pages from Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix, Reiji Matsumoto's Ghost Warrior, Riyoko Ikeda's The Rose of Versailles, and Keiji Nakazawa's BarefootGen.

This book is a useful reference tool for those researching Manga and contemporary Japanese art - although it is by no means complete. It is also slightly out of date, but that is only because it would be impossible to keep up with the tidalwave of japanese-language manga, let alone the stuff that reaches the western world.

Also of note to those thinking of buying are the excerts in the back. These are from genres not usually seen in the west, such as the romance comic.

This books strongest point is its use of illustrations and the factual way it lays out the history - rather than the gushing praise of the comic fan. It is let down by not being able to cover the more recent trends, but it makes up for that by being the only comprehensive study of the genre.

Schodt discusses in graphic detail the evolution of Japanese comics from its roots in "irresponsible pictures" in 12th century scrolls, to Disney inspiration in the early 1950s, and works up to the '80s -- presenting such genres as sports, history, science fiction, and shojo (girls) comics.

This book might not be an exhaustive coverage of the Japanese comics industry, but Schodt makes a heroic attempt.
