Book Description

22 Dec 2008 Manga Guide To...

Want to learn about databases without the tedium? With its unique combination of Japanese-style comics and serious educational content, The Manga Guide to Databases is just the book for you.

Princess Ruruna is stressed out. With the king and queen away, she has to manage the Kingdom of Kod's humongous fruit-selling empire. Overseas departments, scads of inventory, conflicting prices, and so many customers! It's all such a confusing mess. But a mysterious book and a helpful fairy promise to solve her organizational problems-with the practical magic of databases.

In The Manga Guide to Databases, Tico the fairy teaches the Princess how to simplify her data management. We follow along as they design a relational database, understand the entity-relationship model, perform basic database operations, and delve into more advanced topics. Once the Princess is familiar with transactions and basic SQL statements, she can keep her data timely and accurate for the entire kingdom. Finally, Tico explains ways to make the database more efficient and secure, and they discuss methods for concurrency and replication.

Examples and exercises (with answer keys) help you learn, and an appendix of frequently used SQL statements gives the tools you need to create and maintain full-featured databases.

(Of course, it wouldn't be a royal kingdom without some drama, so read on to find out who gets the girl-the arrogant prince or the humble servant.)

This EduManga book is a translation of a bestselling series in Japan, co-published with Ohmsha, Ltd., of Tokyo, Japan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on learning about databases 15 May 2009
By Thurstan Johnston VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Its weird and wonderful, but it works! Done in the style of a manga graphic novel this book teaches you all about relational databases. Seems to cover everything and delivers it in an amusing but informative way.

Well worth a look if you know nothing about databases

4.0 out of 5 stars Adds gravy to an otherwise dry meal 24 Mar 2012

I found this book helpful in getting a good grounding in data bases. Nicely structured Information in that each knowledge chunk builds well on the last. The comic story adds relief, and sets up a visual reference for learning a topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and informative 19 July 2011

A manga comic that follows several characters as they try to replace their inefficient spread-sheet system, which controls and monitors stock and sales with a relational database. Throughout the story a fairy explains to them the problems with the current system and how they can be addressed with a database.
An odd concept, but having heard about this book I had to have a look. Throughout the book more 'sober' sections enforce the preceding lesson and there are some questions to answer in order to check your understanding.
For someone with little or no knowledge of what a database is, or without any formal training (the so-called "accidental dba") this can be quite entertaining. It doesn't cover any area in a great deal of depth, but gives brief descriptions of most aspects. It certainly provides a starting point for further studying.
The sections of the book are:
1. What is a Database - The 'what' and 'why' of a database.
2. What is a Relational Database - Database Terms, Set and Relational Operations.
3. Let's Design a Database - E-R, Normailsation
4. Let's Learn About SQL - SQL terms and functions.
5. Let's Create a Database - Transactions, Locks, Checkpoints, Indexes, Optimising Queries.
6. Databases Are Everywhere - Distributed Databases, Stored Procedures and Triggers, Partitioning, Two-Phase Commit, Replication, OO Databases.

Quite enjoyable and informative.

Years ago when starting off in IT I read and reread the Codd paper on Relational Database theorem how I wish this was available then. Okay I'm into IT and I'm keen on manga so I'm an easy sell. This admission aside despite the friendly comic interface it is actually a very good book on the basics of relational databases .
Each chapter has a manga section which is part of an ongoing narrative which requires explaining some area of relational databases.
Accompanying each manga section is a more traditional text which reinforces what you've just read and some questions so it reinforces the concepts being introduced in each chapter in an easily consumed way ( well if you read graphic novels anyway).

I guess the reason I haven't given this 5 stars is because this book will not be to everyones taste Manga and database theorems are admittedly a rare combination and it leaves you wanting more. For the Geeks out there what a combination and you are left wondering where are the manga guides to advanced relational database and Nosql never mind the other potential titles.
This is one of a series of educational books which also includes:
the manga guide to statistics
The manga guide to electricity
The manga guide to physics

I'm not sure who these titles are aimed at though. Seriously tempted to get the Manga guide to physics. Recent titles are on relativity and the universe .

Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Kawaii Guide That Is Surprisingly In Depth 3 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This book, despite it's 'comical' appearance, is much more than a superficial pamphlet on database structure and querying - it is, in fact, very in depth and mindful of a best-practice approach to creating, organizing, and using databases. It comes with very clear descriptions and plenty of examples and quiz questions to help you get a firm grasp of the concepts.

Well worth picking up, and the perfect gift for the otaku geek in your life.
