Product Description

Double-bill of the groundbreaking Japanese anime feature and its sequel. In 'Ghost in the Shell' (1995), set in a futuristic world where cyberspace, artificial intelligences and cyborg cops are the norm, only the Ghost (the indefinable element of human consciousness) exists to determine who is alive and who is purely a creation of the Net. Major Motoko Kusanagi is an elite officer in the Shell Squad who has been so heavily modified that little more than her Ghost remains. She is assigned to finding a computer criminal who is skilled enough to hack into the minds of his victims, and she finds that he uses humans as puppets to do his evil deeds. Things soon take on a more sinister twist, and it's up to Kusanagi to get to the bottom of it. 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence' (2004) is the more philosophical sequel. Set in 2032, the boundaries between human and robot have started to break down, and cyborg alteration is now completely the norm. Public Security Section 9 is the organisation responsible for policing this brave new world, and when cyborg detective Bato takes on a case of a female pleasure robot that brutally murdered its owner, he uncovers similar crimes taking place throughout the city, as robots, cyborgs, and even humans start to question what it really means to be alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Influential and beautiful 9 May 2007

Both the films in this boxset are made by the same team and are an enjoyable watch but for different reasons.

The first film is the original Ghost in the Shell is a classic anime movie and is one of the influences behind the Matrix films. Although the animation is quite crude compared to that of more modern anime it is still a joy to watch and the film is very well scripted, with some great action as well as some more thoughtful and philosophical moments. This film is a must see for any anime fans.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is the second film and although not as good as the original Ghost in the Shell it is still an excellent film. Much of this is due to the incredibly beautiful animation, using a mixture of computer generated 3D backdrops and traditional animation for the characters has lead to this film being one of the most beautiful I have ever watched. The problem with this film though is that for some reason the storyline isn't as involving as that of the first film.

These films are both interesting and fun to watch and are a must see for anime fans and although these films have a different continuity to the Stand Alone Complex series it is still a must see for anyone who likes either Gig.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! 14 Oct 2009

Prior to this the only related kind of movie I have seen was Akira and the Animatrix. I was intrigued, partly through curiosity but from what other people have said in their own reviews. The films are indeed beautiful, amazing imagery, and whilst I didn't think the storylines were very good(or possibly deemed unimportant next to the stunning visuals) it was easy to follow for the most part.

I'm no expert on animated movies but it was easy to see that an awful lot of care and attention to details has gone into these movies, a labour of love I suspect. I enjoyed both for different reasons. I would recommend anyone with a few pounds to spare to take a chance on something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars 11 out of 10 19 July 2009

Epic.

THE cyberpunk anime has produced two movies (okay three but the first two are in this item) Ghost in the Shell & Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (usually just called GitS & Innocence respectivly) the third is Solid State Society and HIGHLY recommended (but it's nice to have the set).

The movies themselves follow the same basic storyline of the anime and manga but don't tie in...

In GitS the team investigate a string of horrific suicides caused by the 'Puppetmaster' and the Major discovers something that makes her doubt her own existance.

In Innocence Batou & Togusa investigate a series of gynoid (sex robot) murders and discover something chilling about the creation of the dolls.
