4.0 out of 5 stars Manfrotto 488RC2 Ball Head, 22 Feb 2009
I have had this head for about five years and it has been consistently rock solid and still doesn't have any signs of wear. Recently I have been using it on a carbon Fibre mono pod and it does feel heavy compared to the mono pod but allows me to swivel into portrait mode with ease. I think if you are looking for a mid size and cheap head then this is the one to go for.

If I had to say anything negative about it, it would be that the plate could be longer because when a heavy lens is fitted to the camera, the whole lot tends to swivel a bit on the plate. There are replacement plates however, which I haven't tried. I have never been tempted to "over tighten" the screw into the base of the camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manfrotto Midi Ball Head, 8 July 2009

A little heavier than some but very sturdy. The extra rotational adjustment and lock makes this a much better buy. Great for astrophotography as full vertical view of the night sky is possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good compact head, 10 Dec 2008
By BenAS (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
A great compact tripod head. FOr me one of the great things about this head is the size, it is big enough to cope with a large DSLR and heavy zoom lens, but will not take us so much room in the tripod bag.

This is great for travel, or photography where you have time to set up the shot. The downside, and it is not really a problem, is that if you are not holding the camera when you loosen the ball the camera can swing down and bang in to your tripod leg - but this is a problem with all Ball heads - no biggie!
