Product Description

Product Description

The MVH500AH is a lightweight head with a wider platform for HDSLR bodies which has a sliding plate which travels to balance the latest interchangeable lens cameras. The entry-level 500 ensures smooth shots and fine control with up to 5kg (11lbs) of equipment. It's the most compact head in our successful Bridging Technology range and it replaces the Manfrotto 701HDV video head. Beautifully smooth shots: the 500 has professional fluid cartridges on both pan and tilt axes to ensure that every camera movement is smooth, controlled and precise. . Faster, easier and safer to use: the side lock system allows the camera and sliding QR plate to click quickly into the head from above, instead of needing to be aligned and slid in from the back. No secondary safety lock is necessary. The side lock system also makes it quicker and simpler to lift the camera out of the head from above. . . The 500 has a pre-set counterbalance of 2.4kg (5.3 lbs), but is able to support equipment of up to 5kg (11 lbs). The 500 has one Easy Link 3/8" connector to allow an external monitor or other accessory equipment to be fitted. MVH500AH head with flat base tripod mount for attachment to a hybrid photo/video tripod, a traditional photo tripod, slider, a monopod or other supports.

Very high quality and works well BUT the non-adjustable balance system means that when using a lightweight camcorder, when you tilt up or down and then let go the handle, the head tries to return. This can be reduced by delicate adjustment of the vertical clamp but of course this means the tilt is much stiffer. Pan is great with no spring back so it's a pity the same can't be said for the tilt.
The other major problem is the cost of additional 500 PLONG camera plates. £65 even on Amazon is disgusting and almost stopped me from buying this head. If you need extra plates, this is not the head for you.

Dissapointing. I'm thinking of returning it. I cant get a silky smooth start to a pan...it seems to stick very slightly. Not necessarily a design fault....perhaps a one-off Friday afternoon job?

This head is fantastic due to it's smaller size and weight compared to other models such as the 502. The best feature has to be the new drop in quick release system. This head is definitely more suited to the DSLR shooter, especially if your using a rig with rail rods. The fluid system works very well and when compared to the 501, i'd say it's about half way on the pan and tilt adjustment. I've bought a few these heads for my monopod, tripod and slider as I prefer the drop in quick release system when compared to the slide in system. The locking knob on the right hand side is also a fantastic feature as it no longer hits the bottom of the camera when locking the quick release plate into place. This was definitely an issue when using a DSLR with older heads. Overall a highly recommended product with solid construction and well worth every penny.

I have always used monfrotto heads. My previous one 324rc2 had an easy to use grip device rather than a series of butterfly bolts making head adjustment a breeeze. I would still be with that one if it wasnt foor its lack of ability to shoot straight up for taking astrophotography / lunar shots. This one does it perfectly and fels rock solid so you know your 400mm prime lenses is going to be knocked off. I have dropped it one star as i did notice a weird phenominum on my copy. If you adjust the angle slightly, it has a slightly spongy feel to the movement and it tries to creep back to the previous position but as soon as you lock down the buuterfly bolt it stays in place. Would definately recommend this head.

Love the new "drop in" system instead of the sliding in from the back as I had a lot of problems with my video rigs on previous types of Manfrotto heads.

This was brought primarily for my Konova K5 Slider as its light and small. Very happy indeed.

I had my doubts about something this cheap, but I needn't have worried. For small cameras like the GH3 or DSLRs etc this is perfect, especially when you have to carry it around in a backpack and it can easiily support a 7"monitor attached with a hydrostat arm, in fact it improves the "play" of it. Although there's no counterbalance or pan adjustment, I don't really need it. I just use the levers to crank up a bit of friction and that does the job, especially when you have to do a "stop-go" tilt. After you tilt and you want to 'freeze frame' so to speak, you just tighten the tilt lock ever so slightly and it holds. It helps to have the pan adjustment knob turned a bit to to steady the camera for those kinds of moves, but after a bit of practice you can get quality results. If you were to see some of my footage you'd swear I was using a high quality Sachtler or Vinten for example.
I also came across a bit of play or a slight jump when panning but I figured it out. It can be as a result of the cold weather and/or if the head isn't fastened on properly enough. You really have to make sure the head is on as tight as it can go before screwing in the 3 screws in to get the best out of it.
Once you do that, you'll have a pretty good start to your pans, not perfect, but with a gentle start, no one need know you've a budget entry level tripod head in your hands.
I used it to get a pan of the sun for my short film and it performed perfectly. I got such a creamy smooth pan.
So, if you can get used to the lack of creature comforts such as pan adjustment and tilt counterbalance and use a bit of DIY, you'll be able to get some great footage and without having to spend 100s on more expensive equipment.
I love the sideways insertion of the plate and the ergonomics of it.

I use this for scoping and digiscoping. Very impressed with how smooth it moves. Slightly heavy but then that is a sign of the build quality.
