This thing rocks!!! 12 Sep 2007
By brainleek007 TOP 500 REVIEWER
I bought this head to go with the Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod and it's really flippin' good.

It's just so easy to use! Once you've got the camera secured onto the head and tripod assembly all you do is squeeze the handle to release the grip on the ball joint housed within the unit and you can move the camera into almost any position imaginable! You can point it up about 5 degrees or down 90 degrees and also rotate the camera into portrait orientation on the left or right side in seconds.

The really cool and timesaving part though is the detachable plate mechanism. What you have is a little plate that screws into the base of the camera using the normal tripod screw. To detach the camera from the head all you do is flick a little locking lever underneath and pull back the main locking lever on top and the camera is free to handhold with the plate unobtrusively still attached to the base of the camera. It takes about 1 second and means you don't have to unscrew anything. To reattach the camera simply get the bevelled edge of the plate back in its recess then let the other side click down, push the main locking lever in a bit to ensure a firm grip and flick the underneath locking lever and voila its back on in about 2 seconds, rock solid and ready to point anywhere.

The head also has a dial to adjust the tension required to overcome the grip of the ball and socket joint. It is rated to handle a camera combo up to 5kg which will cover most gear combinations save for those huge white canon 'L' super zooms weighing as much as a small child.

And finally this thing is BUILT - it will last for years. And it has a cute little spirit level built in!

I want to knock a star off for the price but can't bring myself too. It's just so easy to use.

Fabulous piece of gear.

I havehad a go with the new tripod head in past couple of weeks(Manfrotto 322rc)- it supports the weight of a Canon 40D and sigma 150-500mm beautifully but it is awkward to use without a cable release - i am right handed and therefore assumed the best set up for me was the right handed set up. However this means i can not focus or fire the shutter when panning after targets!!! if you use a cable release or remote you can use your left hand to focus and fire. The head is very versatile and can be changed to left hand or vertical pistol grip set ups - however i ve not triedd this yet so i can not say if this is easily achieved. I suppose it is completely different to the pan head design i was using before and it will take a little getting used to. I will check the instructions to look at the other set ups that can be run. The workings are smooth and there is less 'droop' than in other models.

used to own the MG460 - a sort of stubby 3 way head. it was always rock solid but suchj a faff on to adjust. was unsure about these 322rc2's, being £30 more than a ballhead that can take twice as much weight. Trying these out in Jacobs one day sealed the deal.! So easy to precisely adjust to the nth degree. Couldn't be easier to operate. The only flaw is that it comes out right handed as standard. It makes more sense to alter it to left handed (which you can easily do by undoing 2 screws and moving the plate), so you can adjust it as you operate the camera.
Can't say enough good things about this otherwise!
