The Manfrotto 055X PRO B tripod is an excellent choice for the photographer who wishes to have all the flexibility of a decent quality fully adjustable tripod but without the bling factor or expense of a carbon fibre one.
The construction quality of the tripod is superb. It is well put together and will certainly withstand regular use and accidental abuse. The poles are anodised black and the head area and the leg adjusters are durable black paint.
The legs are easily adjusted (even with thin gloves on) via the quick release locks. There are 3 sections to each leg. The leg angle is adjusted by another quick release catch that is silver and located at the top of the leg. There are 4 set angles from rather steep through to horizontal. Each leg can be adjusted independently so you get that camera exactly where you need it with minimal fuss. There is a grippy rubber bung on the base of each leg for secure positioning on most surfaces. Not great on wet rock, but then what is?
The centre section can be raised or lowered by around 40cm or so (stability is sacrificed when the centre column is raised, so bear that in mind especially when using heavier telephoto lenses).
The position of the centre column can be changed from vertical to horizontal via a newly designed pivot mechanism. You simply unscrew the centre column locking thread a little bit, raise the column to its highest, pushing in the little sprung loaded button located at the bottom of the leg. Then the column easily rotates to the horizontal position where it has the full forty something centimetres of movement once more. It's an improvement on the older 055 in its ease of use, but I have noticed it does seem to give a modest amount of flex when in the horizontal position. If careful this is no problem at all. The tripod goes extremely low when the centre column and legs are horizontal, proving perfect for macro photography. Allows `rabbit eye view' of many plants and fungi!
The top screw thread fitting for the tripod head is the standard size allowing all Manfrotto heads and the majority of other brands to be attached. There is a little sprit level on the centre column top too, which is nice if you like them.
Two of the legs have a 30cm section of durable dense foam on the top of them, might not look much to begin with, but they are fantastic! When it is freezing and you have forgotten your gloves they stop your hands from being instantly numbed by the aluminium poles, which from my high school science base, I know to be one of the best causes of Baltic finger known to man.
I have owned two 055 tripods. The first was with me for 8 years and I sold it only because it did not have a horizontal centre column. That first one withstood those 8 years of my heavy handedness without fuss, this newer one is looking like it will be with me for a very long time.
A worthy investment for the photographer wanting durable, functional kit.
