Book Description

1 July 2003
Clarissa is an archetypal LA babe. She is 28 (real age 31), has never done a day's work in her life and is outspoken, hedonistic and exceedingly manipulative. And she wants to keep it that way. Her life is a constant round of lunches with her hilariously bitchy girlfriends (known as the Star Chamber), parties, and yet more parties. The only thing missing from her life is a rich husband to keep her in the manner to which she has become accustomed. So, without further ado, she sets about planning an extravagant wedding (just two hundred of her closest friends) and reserving the finest hotel suites in town for her reception before she's so much as spoken to her intended. But she soon finds out that Aaron, the son of a billionaire, is more than a match for her and that, for the first time in her life, Clarissa has bitten off more than she can chew.

Amazon Review

At first glance, Gigi Levangie Grazer appears to be a complete parvenue as a novelist. Maneater rips off every girl-power/shopaholic source from early Tama Janowitz right up to Sex and the City. Her prose can be ungrammatical, her plot hopelessly predictable, and her characters paper-thin. But Grazer has a secret weapon: her preternaturally acid powers of observation. When she writes about the freaky mores of Hollywood, the book exerts an irresistible pull.

Thirtyish LA It girl Clarissa Alpert reflects on her shallow, jobless, mateless (but fabulous) life, and decides it's high time she was married. She and her four best friends (hello, Sarah Jessica Parker and company) hatch a plan to snag the cutest, hottest young producer in town. What ensues is hardly new territory, but the book is enlivened by Grazer's amazing ability to nail down pop culture ephemera. To wit: "Clarissa was sentimental--she liked saving messages from old friends and C-level celebrities. She had an answering tape collection that dated all the way back to babydoll dresses, sparkle dust and Hole." Her eye for detail--and her refusal ever to make Clarissa lovable, or even likable--make Maneater a hypnotic read. --Claire Dederer, Amazon.com

Review

"'This book has changed my life - I now understand the importance of only drinking red drinks'" (Helen Fielding )

"Stylish writing, great fun!" (Candace Bushnell, Author Of Sex And The City )

"'I could not put down Maneater by Gigi Levangie. It was so true to how Hollywood really is'" (Paris Hilton, In Style )

"'Maneater is the rare satire that manages to be both scathingly funny and affectionate toward its targets. Gigi Levangie's gloriously ditzy L.A. party girls make the women of Sex and the City seem like a bunch of stuffy New York intellectuals'" (Tom Perrotta, Author Of Election )

"'This is an entertaining and lively book - but women aren't really like that, right?'" (Steve Martin )

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out load while reading this! 25 July 2003
Format:Paperback
Stylishly written, "Maneater" narrates a story of a spoiled social climber whose goal in life is to marry a rich man with a club foot named Aaron. Please join her as she journeys through the realizations and lessons of what really matters in life, the joys and pretensions of Los Angeles, and the pains of growing up at 28 (31). Clarissa, the heroine, is a charachter you'd love to hate. But trust me, she will make you curl up into a ball LAUGHING. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY do people not love this???? 21 Mar 2005
Format:Paperback
This has to be one of my most favourite books in. the. world. Unlike SATC, Clarissa (the protagonist) can't be bothered with a high flying career as her and all her friends find it much more fun to catch men. Any men.
Call me stupid, but this book is quite easily the funniest book i have ever read. So it might be SATC, but these four girls have more gumption then any of those half soaked NYC "women". This book has a simple message - go out, have fun! Live your life...don't turn into a perma-tan ex-AMW chatting up any old person with a pulse. Girl power at its peak!!!
