Product Description

Mace Llewellyn. Brendon Shaw. Two tall, gorgeous, sexy alpha heroes who are 100% male—with a little something extra. Lion-shifters, to be exact, who can unleash every woman’s animal side and still look good—make that spectacular—in a suit…and even better out of it…

NYPD cop Desiree “Dez” MacDermot knows she’s changed a lot since she palled around with her childhood buddy, Mace. But it’s fair to say that Mace has changed even more. It isn’t just those too-sexy gold eyes, or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal body. It’s something in the way he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle… Meanwhile, for Tennessean Ronnie Lee Reed, New York City is the place where any girl—even one who runs with a Pack—can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion shifter men like Brendon Shaw. But she needn’t worry, because now that Brendon’s set his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go…

"The Mane Event" is two linked stories in one volume. The first story, "Christmas Pride", follows the meeting at Christmastime of two people who were very close at school but whose lives diverged for twenty years. Mace Llewellyn is a human who can turn into a lion and he is being pressured to take up responsibilities within his Pride with regard to the females; however he remembers Dez MacDermot from his youth and believes she is the woman with whom he wants to spend his life. Their meeting again isn't entirely auspicious as it is over the body of one of his Pride members - Dez is a police detective and Mace has just left the Navy. However he instantly insinuates himself into her life, trying to show Dez that they should be together whilst Dez investigates the murder.

The murder plot of this book, although good, is definitely subordinate to the sex part of the book. In some ways that's a disappointment as there were some interesting angles within the mystery - the Lions, Wolves and Hyenas' fighting for territory and yet various individuals crossing boundary lines within species. Most of the action in the book is between Dez and Mace and between the sheets (or in the shower, against a wall, on the couch...) with just a brief fight between the Hyenas and the Wolves to add some interest. Mace's plan for Dez appears to be to wear her down by sex and proximity so that she agrees that they should be together. There are some amusing moments with her two police dogs, with her family and with Mace's partner Smittty but most of the story focuses on the relationship between the main characters - although as a lust-at-first-sight relationship there's little growing or changing between the main characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, but lacking in storyline. 14 Mar 2011
By The Demon Librarian TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
These Pride/Pack books by Shelly Laurenston are more like novellas than full length novels, and lack any real storyline, which I know sounds really bad, BUT, what they lack in storyline they make up for by having some of the funniest, most likable characters and great one-liners, and are really easy to read.

I've also read the three Magnus pack novels by this author and they are much the same style.

I think perhaps if you're in between books or maybe waiting for something else to come out and you just want to read something fun, that doesn't require you to think, like, AT ALL, then these books are fine. They really do make you grin in places. Laurenston writes very snappy, witty characters and makes up scenarios that are just too damn funny.

The book is separated into two stories; Christmas Pride and Shaw's Tail. The first is about a couple who haven't seen each other since high school and they've both been off doing other things for 20 years; she's a cop, he was a marine, and he's never quite forgotten his first crush. So he comes back to town to make her his. P.S he's a shapeshifting lion, which seemed to have very little to do with the story in any way, shape, or form.

The second story is about another shapeshifting lion, who decides he's in love with a commitment phobic, country bumpkin, wild child, hell-raising wolf shifter. As you do. What they hell are their kids going to look like?

Anyway, the books have quite graphic love scenes, literally, one every 3 pages or so (and there aren't a lot of pages to begin with).

Because of the lack of storyline I can't give it anything above a 3 star. They could have been so much better. It's a shame really because this writer has a good eye for characters.

i love shelly laurenston books they make me laugh out loud have great characters and hot sex what more can you ask for, this is no exception with mace and dez and ronnie lee and brendons stories, in this one. all the books are great and the next in line is the beast in him and then mitch and missys story in the mane attraction if you have never read one of her books start with this followed by the beast in him the mane attraction and keep going but if you have never read the pack challenge three start there they are the best, all shelly l's books are fast paced and you forget theres no such thing as lion breeds, alpha's and so forth love shelly l and couldnt recommend any of her books enough.

Seems to be 2 stories, The Mane Event and Shaw's Tail. Haven't read the second one yet. Funny, very sexy and with a light touch although there is a little bit of a story as well.
