I'm a Blues player and I play mandolin, but nowhere near as good as Mr. DelGrosso. Perhaps this book will help me close up on him? Am I expecting miracles? Not really! Wonderful background stories and potted biographies; beautifully presented.

As a guitar player I love to play the blues, but as a mandolinist I've somehow never quite managed to translate blues onto my mando -- it never sounded the way I thought it should. No longer. This excellent book tells me everything I need to know. It begins with blues scales, licks and chord progressions and quickly moves on to full-length pieces, including Rags, Stomps and other blues-style tunes. These are not only great fun to play but are also pretty faithful transcriptions of the original tunes. Almost right away you get several instant classics -- Dallas Rag, Jackson Stomp, State Street Rag, all great tunes that sound amazing on the mando. And that's just the first few pages!

The accompanying CD features the tunes at slow speed to help you play along until you have got them under your fingers. Check out YouTube for performances that are generally a lot faster once you are proficient. The book also has lots of history and stories about blues mando and its almost-forgotten exponents.

If you enjoy this, I strongly recommend you track down Steve Parker's book "Ragtime for Fiddle and Mandolin", which can be ordered from his Ragtime Resources website (though sadly the author has now passed away).

Bought for my husband. He loves it. It is like a window on a little piece of Americana. He has played tunes from it, sounds great. Perfect for the intermediate mandolin player.

Lots of great blues to learn (both the basics, and individual pieces of music), plus snippets of useful information on key blues artists and mandolins generally.

If you like mandolin blues this is a good starting point to get into different styles. Helps if you can play a bit. Good value for money
