Book Description

1 April 2010
We long for heroes but have too few. Nelson Mandela is perhaps the last pure hero on the planet. For nearly three years Time magazine editor Richard Stengel collaborated with Mandela on his autobiography and travelled with him everywhere. Eating with him, watching him campaign, hearing him think out loud, Stengel came to know all the different sides of this complex man. He became a cherished friend and colleague. Now he has distilled countless hours of intimate conversation with Mandela into fifteen essential life lessons. In Mandela's Way, he recounts the moments in which 'the grandfather of South Africa' was tested and shares the wisdom he learned: why we should keep our rivals close, why courage is more than the absence of fear, and why the answer is not always either/or but often 'both'. Woven into these life lessons are remarkable stories - of Mandela's childhood as the protégé of a tribal king, of his early days as a freedom fighter, of the twenty-seven-year imprisonment that could not break him, and of his new and fulfilling marriage at the age of eighty. This profoundly inspiring book captures the spirit of this extraordinary man - warrior, martyr, husband, statesman, and moral leader - and spurs us to look within ourselves, reconsider the things we take for granted, and contemplate the legacy we'll leave behind.

Product Description

"If we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievements of others. Richard Stengel is one of those people who readily grasps this idea ... He has shown remarkable insight into the many complex leadership challenges still facing the world today and all the individuals in it. Everyone can learn from it." (Nelson Mandela)

"A beautiful book - even better than Long Walk to Freedom - and even more inspiring" (Sir Richard Branson)

"There is no man I admire more than Nelson Mandela. Rick Stengel's wise and moving book captures the Nelson Mandela I have been privileged to know. But reading Mandela's Way gave me new insights and inspiration. I am confident it will give the same gifts to others. I was inspired anew, and I know that others will be too." (Bill Clinton)

"Nelson Mandela has walked a long road and Richard Stengel's artful distillation of the lessons learned along the way is a gift. Through anecdotes both heartwarming and heartbreaking, this uplifting, inspiring volume makes Mandela's hard-won wisdom accessible to anyone who wants to play a part in making the world a better place." (Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea)

"This delightfully inspiring book is a philosophical guide to how we can aspire to achieve Mandela's grace and how we can draw upon his greatness as a model for the comportment of our lives each day." (Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Harvard University)

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching book on Mandela's values. 24 Jun 2011
By deela
This book is an easier, more gentle read than the tomb that is his biography. I love this book. It tells his story through snapshot experiences and encounters with certain individuals in his life which have changed him and formed his values today. It is very moving.

This would be a good book for people who aspire to be leaders in their field. There are some golden nuggets in this honest appraisal of this imperfect man who has had such a huge influence for good in his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inspirational and a great read. 16 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm currently working on a Mandela project and found Stengel's book to be the best introduction to the man and the forces which made him. Stengel spent almost three years in Mandela's company, thus his insights are both profound and have authority. The book itself is an inspiration. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting 25 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book for many reasons but I think the obvious one was that the writer was able to convey that although Nelson Mandela is considered a hero amongst other adorations, it reminds us that he is also just a man that had a cause worth fighting for and so many people with causes, it also mentions his many sacrifices that such people has given.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 15 Nov 2012
By Kelz
First of all i'd like to say this is easy reading but in a nice way without being boring. It is extremely realistic about the events that unfolded that were not always pleasant. It gives an honest view about Nelson Mandela. The author seems to capture the Nelson magic and at times it is really emotional but in an inspiring way. The way he has devised the chapters is great each chapter is based on Mandela's principles. Beautifully written and all I can say is "What a man!"

My favourite quote is "Courage is not the absence of fear" believe me though there are many more great ones.

I would highly recommend this book. Happy reading!

As a native born South African I read this with great interest. It was truly fascinating and like the autobiography of Nelson Mandela it gave a great insight to this man who became a legend in his own life time. It was a book that causes you to think and imagine how, why and what this great human endured. His legacy was living every day of his life and learning from it as he went on.
