4.0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is!, 3 Jan 2007
By S. WALLACE (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Three CD's packed with quite wisely selected words/phrases. Voices are very clear and it's easy to pick up the tones simply by listening. The paper guide also gives all the detail you can ask for from this type of product (English, pinyin with tones and Chinese). The only draw back is, you need some way of testing yourself though! I personally created a computer program to read the passages back to me in random orders, as I feel my brain remembers order of words/phrases easier that it actually translates them, thus randomising them helped get over that (which is not possible on the normal playback). I also created some basic tests that would read out a random Chinese word/phrase or show the Chinese text and then it would give me selections of English answers (this helped a lot, and I am sure anyone could do something similar, even if its just using small cards of paper and a partner). Back to the product though, this is by far the best of this type of product I have seen, and this method of learning seems to work best for me. The CD's are broken into sections (tracks) which are maybe 5 to 10 minutes long each, listening to one track for say a week over and over again should drill it into your head, then move onto the next. Again, I would definitely find some way of testing yourself though, as it's easy to forget something if its not pointed out to you that you have actually forgotten it. Good luck with learning Chinese!

4.0 out of 5 stars Came in very handy, 31 Oct 2007
By Roscoe "Roscoe" (Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
I'm not one for writing reviews, but I was so impressed with this item I thought it right.

These CDs are well laid out and concise. The speech is clear and you are given plenty of time to pronounce each word/sentence. You are even provided with a space in between the English word and the first Chinese pronunciation, so that when you become proficient with that particular word you can say it before the Chinese prompt: effectively providing you with mini tests throughout the CD.

The choice of words and phrases came in handy when I was in China. It covered most of the essentials, and provided a good foundation to build on. The lessons progress steadily and introduce one word at a time, meaning you are never flummoxed by alien phrases that require intense concentration.

The already high quality and usability of the CDs is enhanced by the pocket-sized transcript of each lesson.

The only negative aspect of Learn in Your Car Chinese I can identify, is the occasional use of words that are not the most commonly used for that purpose in Chinese speakers. This might be due to the company choosing the most literal word when translated.

I highly recommend this CD pack to anyone planning a trip to China.
