Generally pretty good, although I never used it often. These days mobile phones have apps that can do good jobs. Also, there were many words that I cannot find in it. But it's still better than i expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Dictionary 29 Aug 2009
By Sue J - Published on Amazon.com
This dictionary is really handy! It does not have phrases or expressions, but has most of the single words I've gone to look up. It is small and the print is easy to read. The entry words are bold so it's easy to keep your place. It is a great size and the price is super! I use it many times a week as I'm studying Mandarin. It even has the characters with each entry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy as Heck for Living or Traveling in China, Singapore or Taiwan 10 Jan 2013
By Rick - Published on Amazon.com
I've been using this convenient, compact dictionary of putonghua, or Mandarin Chinese, in China as an educator for a decade. I've found it easy to use: it contains both Chinese characters and pinyin, the Romanized version, with the four tones necessary to distinguish sounds and words. Instead of lengthy definitions, it provides one or two word meanings and synonyms as well as alternate pronunciation to account for regional variation in usage. Few, if any, other small dictionaries offer all these things. It has only the most frequently used words in 88 little pages. No extra pages stuffed in. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket Mandarin Chinese Dictionary 27 Sep 2011
By Lomlone - Published on Amazon.com

This is a wonderful tool! I have learned a little spoken Mandarin, not yet learned to read characters, and am doing some traveling in China. The combination of pinyin, Chinese characters, English, and the dictionary's light weight is perfect!
2.0 out of 5 stars A travel dictionary without Useful Phrases. 22 Sep 2014
By A. Lloyd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a good size for someone taking a trip to China and does an OK job explaining the pinyin pronunciations but it lacks the most critical part of a travel dictionary: Common/Useful phrases!

This book will teach you how to say "taxi" and "restaurant", but not any useful phrases like "How much?", "No thank you", "Where is the bathroom?", etc.

As a result, I didn't fund much use for this while my wife and I were in China for 10 days.
3.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet 27 April 2014

I was a little surprised by the size of the dictionary, though I probably didn't read the description well enough. It's about 1/2" thick, so not as much to it as I expected. However, I do like the easy-to-read font, and the definitions are brief. I don't need lengthy definitions in a pocket dictionary. It's in Pinyin, which is great for English speakers like me who don't read Chinese characters.
