5.0 out of 5 stars Manchester... The sinister side 29 Oct 2003
By A Customer
In the nineteenth century Manchester's reputation for crime and depravity was second only to London, this book takes us on a trip through the slums, gin houses and brothels of the city to witness the atrocious living conditions that in part led to the high levels of crime. Many of the photos of criminals are from the Manchester Police Museum and published for the first time.

If you thought the Victorian era was of big houses and servants then think again. This book tells the truth about how ordinary people lived in Manchester in the 19th Century, you need to read it to believe it! The photographs are brilliant. Absolutely fascinating but quite shocking as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tales To Make You Appreciate Modern Living 27 Jun 2010

This book is ok I have seen most of the pictures on the internet and read most of the stories in the book but its still a handy little book. Tells of the horrific conditions the working classes lived in - 1 toilet between 40 houses 18 to a room not pleasant no wonder the public houses overflowed with the people they had nothing or nowhere to go home to you could see why some committed crimes, probably for a decent meal and a bed to themselves...very grim....After reading this it made me happy to be born 20th century and not 19th century.
