5.0 out of 5 stars not a guide to Manchester 28 Nov 2012

'Rather than entitle it `not a guide to Manchester', this informative and entertaining little book might have been more appropriately named `more than a guide to Manchester' since it is packed with a wealth of both strange and interesting facts which must have been painstakingly researched.

Although each of the chapters can be read as a stand-alone unit, together they form a very cohesive and pleasing whole. The book can be carried easily in bag or pocket and is filled with some great photographs that may evoke a sense of nostalgia and pride for any Mancunian reading it. I feel that this work will be of as much interest to a dweller in the Manchester area as to a visitor to its streets.

`not a guide to Manchester' is the kind of work that you can easily `dip into' and that may encourage you to do your own research on some of the topics covered. Whilst highly edifying, in view of some of its topics, it is a book that clearly does not take itself too seriously. In this respect, it has the right balance of wit and gravity.

In the run-up to Christmas, `not a guide to Manchester' would make a great stocking-filler.

Well written and informative. A good read just for the information alone. Small enough to fit in a briefcase. Enjoy!
