Product Description

Product Description

Combining rigour and flexibility, MSP helps all organisations - public sector and private, large and small - achieve successful outcomes from their programme management time and time again. With change a pressing reality for all organisations, successful programme management has never been more vital to success. Organisations must respond as new processes or services are introduced, supplier relationships alter and structures adapt to market forces or legislation. At the same time, all organisations strive to achieve excellence by improving practices, offering better services, preparing more effectively for the future and encouraging innovation. But change always creates new challenges and risks. Inevitably there will be interdependencies to manage and conflicting priorities to resolve as the organisation adapts not just to a new situation internally but to the constantly shifting world outside. To enable organisations to manage their programmes successfully, they need a structured framework that does two things. It must acknowledge that every programme exists in its own context and demands unique interpretation. At the same time it must be universally applicable. MSP has been developed with these two priorities in mind. Its framework allows users to consistently manage a huge variety of programmes so that they deliver quality outcomes and lasting benefits. Fusing leadership with management best practice, MSP enables organisations to coordinate their key functions, develop a clear sense of unity and purpose and achieve the strategic cohesion necessary to drive through effective change

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book to move Project Managers in to the world of Programme Management, 26 Nov 2008
By Karl Grocock (Bristol, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A brilliant book covering all aspects of the Managing Successful Programmes curriculum. Easy reading and well laid out it takes you through the requirements for the MSP qualification for both foundation and practitioner levels. Excellent coverage of those bits of project management that didn't really make sense under Prince2 i.e. when you wanted to talk outcomes but were stuck talking outputs. This book and thence the qualification will allow project managers to enter the realms of Programme Management and put together meaningful business related programmes to move organisations forward. If you do embark on this journey make sure your senior managers are similarly interested/inclined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passing the MSP Exams, 16 Feb 2009
By M. Harte "Pragmatist" (UK) - See all my reviews

If you're serious about understanding and passing the MSP Practitioner Certification Exam then you need this book Managing successful programmes (Office of Government Commerce). Period. Although well structured and easliy searchable it is an 'academic' text rather than a practical 'hands-on' guide. Current Project and Programme Managers will no doubt find much to disagree with but buy it, digest it, get the exam out of the way, then select and implement the appropriate parts as required.

4.0 out of 5 stars MSP Review, 30 May 2009
By H. Bungar "H" (UK) - See all my reviews

I've rated this book 4 out of 5 because it's an easy read. Far easier then Prince 2. It's well laid out, easy to navigate and ultimately, I read this book and passed the MSP exam (with some additional work of course).

It's examples aren't great because the depth isn't there but they do provide a flavour of the real world.

It's a compulsory read for individuals taking the foundation/practitioner examination. It would also provide some very useful insights for Project Managers on how projects connect to programmes, alignments, capabilities v outcomes, business drivers etc to name a few.
