2.0 out of 5 stars Platitudes 20 Jan 2010
By PH-LFC
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
One to avoid. Very poor value for money.

This book lists the theory, which I suppose is the biggest criticism of Prince and MSP. Anyone can list what should be done - how to do it is much harder.

The book is authored by mainly by Civil Servants from departments with no track record in delivering or managing complex change - NHS and HMRC.

There are long lists of platitudes, but little practical advice/process in applying them in large complex commercial environments.

If you really are actually managing a portfoilo then look at Strategic Project Portfolio Management by Simon Moore, chapter 5 is v good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing it all together 25 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a good, clear book, showing how to build and manage portfolios of change.

I would highly recommend it even if you are not using MSP or PRINCE2; it contains a lot of well structured rigour and plain common sense.

As the author suggests it will be of most value and of greatest use to those managing change in large, complex organisations.

If you are managing smaller, more discrete change you won't need this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value and guidance 18 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I think this book has much going for it. It is a sensible pragmatic view of what portfolios have come to mean over the last few years and how to manage their establishment and running.

APM, PMI and OGC have all produced portfolio management guidance recently but this is an excellent grounding and gives a firm foundation on which the more detailed stuff from other sources can be built.

I rate this book very highly and, when read in conjunction with other advice, provides an excellent set of clear guidelines to run major portfolios of change in any larger organisation.
