I used this book to study for the 70-218 exam, but I still don't understand the positioning of either the exam or book. This was the last exam I required to gain MCSA, so I found that the book added very little to what I had already learnt from the other study guides. Chapters 1 to 6 were pure repetition, and I suspect that the following chapters on Active Directory are better covered if studying the Windows 2000 Core training kit. The remaining material covers managing the network components by blending best practices with the technical detail of the 70-216 Network Infrasture stream.

I think this kit would have been better presented if concentrating on managing the network and best practises, using examples to reinforce the technical points. Unfortunately, in many places the text was confusing and it did not indicate what was new material. It's clearly as rushed first edition, as I found over twenty errors myself and in some places the lesson overview highlights concepts which were not covered in the lesson. As with any MSPress kit, one should consult the website for corrections, before turning a page. Still, at the time it was the only self study guide available to cover this essential exam for the MCSA qualification. If I was to sit this exam again, I would not bother studying beyond the Windows 2000 core training kit or the Windows XP equivalents. Instead, I would take one of the self-assessment tests, which are starting to appear and revise any areas of weakness.

Microsoft Press + Sybex Virtual Lab + Transcender worked 1 May 2002
By Paul Harbin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My friend, who is an computer instructor at a local school, recommended that I get this book, Trancender, and the Sybex MCSE Virtual Lab. The combo worked, as I was able to pass the exam pretty easily. This book was my guide, and the Transcender questions showed what I needed to study, with the Sybex Virtual Lab was sweet because it simulated a network so I could do my lab exercises on it. The Trancenders were the most expensive part, so you might want to skip them if you're trying to do it super-cheap. Read the book. Learn group policies. Practice hands on (on the Sybex simulator). Review with Transcender as needed. Worked for me.

New Microsoft Press 26 April 2002
By Wallace V. French III - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I finished up my MCSA cert a few weeks ago. I only used this book to study for the 218 exam. Microsoft has made some changes to there publishing of exam study guides. I think they are trying to compete with the Exam Cram and other study guide books. Previous MCSE study guides didn't give you any insight into the actual exams. This book does. Since it is coming from the people who write the exam it makes for a great study guide. Some of the sample questions in the book were actually on the exam. Kind of pricey, but if you get the cert it's worth it. Good luck.

Once again, MS Press rushes to be first out 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
You would think that a Microsoft Press certification book would be useful in exam preparation. Again, it seems that this book is rushed. In addition to this book being based on old objectives--there are numberous objectives that do not appear to be covered--the book also seems thrown together. It lacks any organization, and is written more like a White Paper...boring!!!!

I think you will be very surprised after reading this book, and then sitting for the exam. Do yourself a favor, and wait for the other books to come out.
