Product Description

VMware is the king when it comes to virtualization. Windows PowerShell has received huge accolades as an extremely powerful tool for automation of IT tasks. These two technologies make a lot of sense together, and VMware is now making that happen with the release of their VI Toolkit for Windows. In "Managing VMware Infrastructure With Windows PowerShell", you will learn how to perform everything from simple ad-hoc reporting at the command-line ("Are any of my virtual machines powered off?") to complex scripts to automate a massive deployment of hundreds of virtual machines. Simple, yet powerful; concise, yet robust; you will enjoy using this new language to solve your old problems using less code than you thought possible. If you are a system administrator responsible for managing a VMware Virtual Infrastructure (version 2.0 or above), or a standalone ESX Server (version 3.0 or above), then you need this book. Aimed at scripters of every level, the book starts off with a PowerShell primer and continues well into the internals of virtualization on the VMware platform.

The VI-Toolkit is a way of administrating and automating VMware environments through Powershell. I didn't really have time to learn Powershell inside and out but this book was useful in giving me that head start as well as being very informative about the VI-toolkit. The author provides a crash course in Powershell before diving deep into the VI-Toolkit command set and its logic. 10 out of 10 from me.

Even if you haven't touched Powershell, Hal's book gets you started with a clear explanation of all the basics. I have given the book to several guys at work just so they can understand what Powershell is!

As for the VMware side, I am still surprised than VI Toolkit - now PowerCli - is not part of standard VMware documentation - it automates so much and Hal's book has lots of great ideas on how to minimise the work your VI Admin has to do every day.

Thoroughly recommended.

So you have used VMWare Virtual Infrastructure 3 or vSphere, you know how powerful it is and how great the features are within the VI client but what happens when you want to get more details or you want to automate some features... You wait for the next version and hope they have included them in there - WRONG !

If you haven't bothered learning PowerShell yet (why not) and you haven't looked at PowerCLI / VI Toolkit then please do yourself a favour and buy this book.

Not only does it give you an amazing insight into the way things work below the GUI it also teaches you the basics of PowerShell and how to use this technology to manage the VMware feature set we have come to know and love.

Hal's unique writing style will take you through learning how to perform many extensive tasks which would normally take hours, sometimes days through the client and show you how to perform these actions within minutes or sometimes seconds. He even adds a little of his own sense of humour to lighten some of the more mundane tasks - which is actually very funny for an American.

In this book you will learn how to deploy multiple virtual machines in minutes, report on the extensive areas of virtual infrastructure and much much more.

Believe me, this is one book I would recommend for any VI Admin to read and store next to your management workstation.

If you are a VI admin reading this then stop doing things the long way and buy the book !
