Getting Better 25 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Previous editions of the PRINCE2 manual were very poorly designed. This one is much easier to use, though still heavy going and not as clear as it could be.

However, this is an essential reference guide to PRINCE2 as it is the official guide. Pure PRINCE2 can be bureaucratic and costly to implement, with limited benefits. However, used as a template, it has many best practice aspects which can be used to develop in-house project methods.

As far as the exams are concerned, this manual is not a substitute for formal training. However, UK employers are now asking for the qualifications on an almost universal basis, so interest can only increase.

This book is the definitive to the PRINCE2 methodology. It is thorough and interesting and easy to read to get you to the exam standard. PRINCE2 is now recognised as a de-facto standard in industry and this book is a must have for all project managers hoping to follow an agreed and proven method.

Inaccessible 30 Mar 2007
PRINCE2 is the "de-facto" standard for project management, particularly in the UK (and particularly for the public sector). Interestingly it's called 'managing successful projects'. Which is a bit of a misnomer. Projects are only successful when finished - in which case there is little to manage (apart from maybe damage control). Why didn't they call it 'Managing Projects successfully'? It seems there is a whole 'training' industry growing around PRINCE2 and this book is intended for these courses. In principle, interested managers can learn PRINCE2 themselves and then go through the Foundation and Practitioner's exams - bypassing all those training courses that pride themselves to be the "best in the UK" and charge you dearly for it. But I am not sure that this book is of great help. I personally find it fairly inaccessible. Lovers of acronyms will have a field day with all these SU's, IP's, SB's etc. But the book itself is as interesting to read as the yellow pages and doesn't bring the application of PRINCE2 any nearer. The book is a list of all the components and processes in PRINCE2. As a reference this is ok - but for self-learners there is nothing that puts the application of PRINCE2 in context with real examples. Come on guys - project management is interesting!
