Review

‘This book is subtitled “a practical guide for directors and managers” and while it certainly is that it’s something else as well: a good read…dealing with fraud is often a matter of crisis management.  With this guide, it needn’t be.’ (The CA, January 2013) ‘Well written with many interesting anecdotes.’  (Supply Business, January 2013) ‘Steve Giles’ credentials to write this comprehensive and entertaining guide to managing fraud risk are unimpeachable’ (Gazette, January 2013) ‘ The keynote of the book is practicality – assessing risk and taking proportionate action…an excellent compendium for all managers’ (Professional Manager, May 2013)

Product Description

A strategic, practical, cost-effective approach to fraud prevention

In troubled economic times, the risk of fraud and financial crime increases. In our post credit crunch environment, new laws and tougher penalties for financial crime mean that if you are in business, you have a responsibility to help fight fraud.

However, to design effective, proportionate fraud controls for your business, you need a complete picture of all the risks. Managing Fraud Risk shows you where to look for fraud, setting out a route-map for finding and fighting fraud risks in your business, with the practical, strategic advice you need.

Combining the latest theory with forensic risk analysis, this book reveals how you can provide assurance to your Board and stakeholders. Practical examples are used to clearly show cost-effective techniques for preventing and detecting business fraud. An innovative fraud awareness quiz enables you to easily apply the theories and principles.

  • Answers questions such as: Who commits more fraud: men or women? How many of your employees are prepared to falsify documents?
  • Essential information to ensure your procedures are sufficient to meet compliance with new international legislation increasing the liability of directors and managers in cases of fraud and corruption
  • Takes a new perspective from the point of view of business risk, making it unique to other texts that take only an auditing, investigative, or specialist approach

This route-map is essential reading to help you navigate the complex landscape of business fraud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, eye-opening and very practical 16 Nov 2012
By Charles
Format:Hardcover
I urged Steve Giles to write this book, and I did so for three reasons.

The first reason is that fraud is so astonishingly, appallingly, gob-smackingly prevalent. Even though we follow the newspaper stories about damaged reputations, ethical shortcomings and larger-than-life fraudsters, the papers barely scratch the surface of the amount of fraud being committed. Some of the statistics and examples in this book will make your hair stand on end.

The second reason is that almost all organisations are complacent about the risk of fraud. The author's Fraud Awareness Quiz neatly exposes the gaps in everyone's understanding of the topic. When (if) directors discover fraud, they are very much on the back foot. Yet it is perfectly possible to create an environment which discourages fraud and makes it more difficult to perpetrate.

And the final reason is that, despite the potential dryness of the subject, Steve is incapable of being anything less than fascinating about it. His stories and anecdotes go beneath the legal and managerial surface and bring the topic to life.

Each chapter is structured around one of the questions in the Fraud Awareness Quiz, and contains a discussion of the practical, ethical and legal issues as well as insights from Steve's career as a fraud investigator, consultant and trainer.

If you're the owner, director or senior manager of any sort of organisation, this book should be on your must-have list. You won't read it at one sitting; it's too comprehensive for that. But it is very readable, and insightful, and practical, and you will find everything you need here to manage the all-too-real risk of fraud.

By David G
Format:Hardcover
This book is a must read for not only financial directors but all directors and senior managers. It is easy to read, informative and full of interesting cases which most certainly focuses the mind. I have no hesitation in recommending it to all my friends and business acquaintances and to everyone who is concerned about possible fraud in their own company's. It is a most compelling book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My best read of the year 2 Mar 2013
By brian
Format:Hardcover
This book is compulsory reading for every professional. It is easily readable, and after doing so I felt I had been on one of Steve's courses for a very reasonable fee. The layout and format is novel and does enable one to take it in logical stages.I just wish the book had been available earlier in my career as all students should have had thee opportunity to read details of cases which become newsworthy and then forgotten. Having chaired the audit committee of a local authority my interrogation of the risk register would have been much more credible with the book by my side!
The Epilogue is almost poetic, and a photo of Steve by the grave in Gibraltar would have been great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Defeating Fraud 10 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Mr Giles brings to the subject of corporate fraud his direct investigative experience in this comprehensive practical guide. The author uses a powerful combination of his own personal experience, the interesting views and perceptions of the many audiences he has addressed on this subject and the outputs from some confidential interviews with senior managers from various businesses, all woven into the legal framework and drawing on fraud cases which have been on the front pages of the financial press over the past 30 years. I have worked for a major international company for many years but there are fresh insights here which got me reaching for pen and paper as I read each chapter. There are valuable thoughts on actions we can all take and this is vital reading for anyone who wants to defend against fraud and protect the integrity of the organisation they work for or lead.
