Performance management is at the top of agendas in most government and public organizations, as well as many not-for-profit organizations. For senior executives in the public sector and government, and for faculty and students in the field this is the authoritative strategic level treatment of this fast-growing area.

* Based on the author's groundbreaking and already successful Strategic Performance Management title (BH, 2006)- Marr is now one of the leading thinkers in this field internationally

* The first rigorous focused analysis for senior public sector management of how to succeed in measurement and management strategies in the light of government scrutiny

* Demonstrates public sector 'best practice' and is packed with relevant public sector examples and cases from the UK, Europe, Asia and the US

I have read and researched this subject a fair amount recently and I can honestly say that this is the book with it all. It explains in very easy and clear terms what performance management is, how it applies in a Not for Profit organisation, and how to use the skills in contains to make a real improvement.

Definitely one to rely on for useful and REAL information.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! 3 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This book shines a common sense light on the subject of performance management. It concentrates on how to make public sector organisations perform better. However, the principles described apply equally to the private sector, and organisations of any size. Bernard Marr's style is informative, straightforward and understandable; he uses analogies and lots of real life examples, which allow the reader to learn for others' experience. It is a joy to read and even better to put into practice!

Following on Bernard Marr's other books around performance management, I found this a very concise and to the point analysis of performance management in the public sector with the backdrop of reduced budgets.

There were no major revelations, but a lot of sound common sense, put together in a readable and understandable format.

Very good focus on deciding priorities and doing things for the right reasons to acheive desired outcomes.

An excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book 5 Jan 2009
By C Smith
Format:Paperback
I've just read this cover to cover and I'm really impressed. I've read many books on the topic of performance measurement but this is by far the most accessible and practical. While it focuses on the Public Sector, Marr's insights and practical solutions will be of use to anyone working in the field of performance management.
