Product Description

Focussing squarely on the needs of today’s business and non-specialist accounting students, the aim of this book is to set management accounting into a contemporary real world context, helping students to apply the theories they learn to management situations and to use clear thinking to obtain the best financial outcome.

Frequently praised for the quality and clarity of writing, this book combines appropriate depth of coverage with a manageable size and a clear and uncluttered layout. It takes an explicitly managerial and practitioner perspective throughout and features really strong application to the real business world.

From the Back Cover

Managerial Accounting for Business Decisions helps students who are new to the subject to understand how the techniques of management accounting are used to solve business problems.

Focusing squarely on the needs of today’s business, management and non-specialist accounting students, the aim of this book is to set management accounting into a contemporary real world context, helping students to apply the theories they learn to management situations and to use clear thinking to obtain the best financial outcome.

This book will assist the reader’s understanding in three key ways:

  1. Understanding the relevance of the principles of management accounting
    – interesting examples of real companies demonstrate the application of ideas to real business situations.
  2. Mastering the techniques and numerical aspects of the subject
    - quality question and answer material enables students to get to grips with the computational aspects of the course.
  3. Interpreting results and understanding the contribution management accounting can make to the management process
    – an excellent ‘Manager’s Point of View’ feature written by a high-level manager looks at the practical aspects of tackling managerial problems with management accounting tools.

This new third edition has been revised and updated throughout and now features:

  • a new introduction for students
  • a new bank of quality assessment materials for lecturers online
  • new chapters on ‘Budgets, Behaviour and Beyond Budgeting’ and on ‘Balanced Scorecards’
  • improved coverage of Activity Based Management (ABM).

“As a practitioner recently moving into academia, this book has a refreshing down-to-earth approach and gives an accurate impression of how the techniques of management accounting are actually applied in business.” – Cathy Knowles, Oxford Brookes University

An ideal text for ‘Introduction to Management Accounting’ courses for business, management and non-specialist accounting students at MBA or undergraduate level. Teaching resources are available online at www.pearsoned.co.uk/proctor .

Ray Proctor has extensive practical experience of management and accountancy, and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at Coventry University and a tutor on the Management Accounting module of the Warwick University MBA.

I have had the privilege of being a student of Ray Proctor at Coventry University, studying this module for two years. I would like to personally thank him for his support throughout my academic years at University. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying these modules as part of my degree, learning a great deal from him and his colleagues.

This book has helped me immensely to get me through these years. It's an excellent book for any beginner to Managerial Accounting, it's a clear and precise book making it very easy to understand with great simple examples to explain the topics. Each topic is detailed and in each chapter there's exercises to complete with solutions at the end, it also includes end of chapter case study questions (more detailed and exam style questions). The book also uses real life case studies, which gives you real life scenarios and relating the topics to the 'real' business environment.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in accounting and especially to those students studying Accountancy related degrees.

An excellent book that helped me to thoroughly understand Managerial Accounting and helped me to pass my final year exams!
