I had bought the book for a horticulture exam which included restoration of established gardens (no prizes for guessing which). It was a very comprehensive book on the topic of historic garden restoration giving pertinent and well consolidated information on practical matters of renovation of historic sites whose aim unlike a contemporary garden is the authentic preservation of the historic design, the difficulty accentuated by neglect, fragility and in some cases unco-ordinated accumulation of historic layers. The book lays out the process from beginning to end, starting from how and where to gather information to help interpretation of the historic significance, legal compliance, logistics including staff, funding, to practical information on renovation and maintenance schedules for historic planting features and plants, and modern equipment available for maintenance. Historic information on the dates and origin of plants by botanical names on historic sites, significant historic design styles were also helpful in determining planting and designs of the relevant era. It also included actual restoration projects as examples helping to visualise work in practice. It could have included the process in renovation of hard features, but I guess on historic sites this will be the premise of the specialist experts. Not the cheapest book but a must not just for exams, but for anyone interested in the preservation of historic parks and gardens.
