Product Description

Product Description

Bateman and Snell’s Management: Leading & Collaborating in a Competitive World is a text with a fully modernized functional approach. This text is maintaining the four traditional functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, while modernizing and re-visioning the concepts as delivering strategic value, building a dynamic organization, mobilizing people, and learning and changing.

Bateman/Snell’ results-oriented approach is a unique hallmark of this textbook. In this ever more competitive environment there are five essential types of performance, on which the organization beats, equals, or loses to the competition which are cost, quality, speed, innovation and new to this eighth edition, service. These five performance dimensions, when done well, deliver value to the customer and competitive advantage to you and your organization. Throughout the text Bateman & Snell remind students of these five dimensions and their impact on the “bottom line” with marginal icons contributing to the leadership and collaboration theme, which is the key to successful management. People working with one another, rather than against, is essential to competitive advantage.

This was a textbook in one of my management classes but it is so well written that, if you have even slight interest in the subject, it can be read for pleasure. There are many interesting real-life examples illuminating the main points of the book where the avid reader can glean all sorts of fascinating information about how companies are run, decision-making and more!

As a textbook, the authors are two of the leading minds in the growing field of management. They traverse all the terrain of management from basic to higher level, presenting their concepts in an organized, clear and practical manner, making the concepts as easy to assimilate as possible, which is a relief for students who have a lot to read. A further help to students is that each chapter closes with discussion questions and activity suggestions that help to assimilate the material.

The Four Principles of Management 26 May 2008
By R. Rashid - Published on Amazon.com
I have read about the four principles and found them very true and practical. Although there are others who would include Funding or Finance as a separate element, here it is explictly discussed with intense details.

A good book for those Managers climbing the corporate ladder.

How do these errors keep getting past editors? 29 April 2011

It really seems to be the standard today for college level textbooks to be chalk full of grammatical errors that would fail a freshman level composition paper. This text is right on track in that regard, five dumb mistakes so far and I'm only four chapters into the book. How about "organizationwide" as one word--no not the Kindle either, that's the hard cover. Or how about:

"To decide, you would estimate the cost and expected returns of such alternatives, TRYING TO FOLLOWING the decision steps advised in Chapter 3". (page 135)

How does that get past a competent editor? Really gets annoying.

Book is slightly wordy and boring to read. Does have good case studies to relate the information, but it still reads like a users manual.
