5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure in the French Pyrenees, 11 July 2007

This review is from: The Man Who Married a Mountain (Paperback)
Having already read 'Life in a Postcard' by the author, I was interested by the title of this book. This book is a travel/ biography of the French Pyrenees and the men who first climbed them in the 19th century. The title is reference to the mountaineer Henry Russell who spent much of his life in this area and his attachment to the peak of Vignemale. Ms Bailey follows in his footsteps giving an account of his life and also seeing for herself the places that he visited. He was a remarkable and pioneering man, and I would love to see a documentary and/or drama of his life.
This is a fantastic book, packed full of detail and beautifully written .I could not put it down, but the amount of detail and information included means that you have to concentrate! I have never been to this region, but that did not matter. The only thing missing was perhaps some photos. If you love travel and history, then read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Man Who Married a Mountain - Rosemary, 16 Nov 2011

This review is from: The Man Who Married a Mountain (Paperback)
We used this very interesting book as our travel guide through the French side of the Pyrenees and followed Rosemary Bailey's
re-tracing of Henry Russell's life and climbing. We saw so many beautiful places, walked, climbed, visited the towns covered in the book and even stayed overnight at the Observatory on the Pic du Midi enjoying the fascinating tours of the telescopes and observation areas. We travelled from Prades across to Biarritz as the book followed the Russell life story and achievements.A once-in-a lifetime journey!
