DVD Description

When the Hellmouth opens beneath Darkplace Hospital in downtown Romford, kiddy doctor, Vietnam veteran and ex-warlock Dr. Rick Dagless M.D. (Garth Marenghi) is the only man who can close it. Joined by best buddy Dr. Lucien Sanchez (Todd Rivers), fiery hospital boss Thornton Reed (Dean Learner), and woman Liz Asher (Madeleine Wool), Dagless must fight the forces of Darkness while dealing with the burden of day-to-day admin. From the chilling pen of best-selling horror writer Garth Marenghi comes this lost masterpiece of televisual terror. Dare you enter Garth’s Darkplace? Live from his luxury apartment in London's glittering East End, Dean Learner - club owner, celebrity manager, restaurateur, entrepreneur and publisher of high-class gentlemen's magazines (including Flesh Wrangler and Skin City) - invites you to meet some his closest friends, Man to Man.* Offering an oasis of culture and sophistication in the rancid scrubland of depravity that passes for modern television. Dean's special guests include the living legends GARTH MARENGHI, STEVE PISING, GLYNN NIMON, MERRIMAN WEIR, AMIR CHANAN and the recently deceased RANDOLPH CAER. This transcendent talk show is the worthy successor to the Socratic dialogues of the Symposium. With cocktails. (*In his capacity as producer of Man to Man with Dean Learner, sole owner of Deano's After Dark Productions and manager of the artistes appearing thereon, Dean Learner acknowledges that there is a potential conflict of interest between his private business concerns and his duty to Channel 4 in providing top-quality, unbiased programming.)

Darkplace is a parody of the sci-fi/horror television genre of the eighties. The acting, dubbing and editing is hilariously awful as Dr. Rick Dagless (Matthew Holness) and his best buddy Dr. Lucien Sanchez (Matt Berry) battle the forces of darkness in Darkplace Hospital. In Episode 1 a male patient explodes leaving only his head on the floor. He tells Dagless "it really hurts." In Episode 3 Dagless adopts the son of a "horny giant eye on legs." In Episode 4 a demented monkey man is urinating in the hospital's water supply. Anyone who drinks the water turns into an ape and the make-up is truly ridiculous. Extras include two documentaries and some memorable audio tracks.

Man to Man with Dean Learner is a chat show featuring Learner (Richard Ayoade) and his guests which are all played by Matthew Holness. Episode 1 features Garth Marenghi and a clip from The War of the Wasps in which Dagless and Sanchez battle giant wasps in helicopter gunships. Episode 2 contains a spoof of The Apprentice. Learner calls one of the unlucky candidates "a ******* toilet." Episode 5 features Amir Chanan - an inspirational psychic who is an expert at "Telekeneticextrasensoryperceptivetelepathicenergisivepsychokinesis" or key bending. Extras include a pilot episode, trailers, a stills gallery and lots of audio tracks.

This boxed set is simply a cardboard box with the Darkplace and Man to Man dvds inside it. There are no exclusive extras but for anyone new to the unique comedy of Holness, Ayoade and Berry this boxed set is the perfect introduction.

Great combo deal 5 Aug 2011
The combination of 'Dark Place' and 'Man to Man' is great. You get an insight into how the characters in 'Dark Place' evolved and you learn a lot more about 'Dagless' and 'Reed'. Dark Place is a classic, a series that I can watch over and over and find something interesting every time.
