Synopsis
Mismatching the two principal characters in a movie has become a comedy staple in Hollywood, and the tradition continues in director Les Mayfield's, THE MAN. Andy Fidler (Eugene Levy) has a cheery outlook on life. Even a less than exciting job selling dental products can't wipe the smile from his face. But when he winds up in Detroit for a dental convention and is wrongly identified as an arms dealer, his smile is in danger of disappearing for good. Tough-as-nails cop Derrick Vann (Samuel L. Jackson) has set up an operation to catch the gang whom run with the villain Fidler – the villain, Fidler has been mistaken for. Eager to find him after the group of gun runners put a permanent end to his partner's career, Vann concocts a screwball scheme in which Fidler will impersonate the crook he resembles, while also trying to shake the Internal Affairs agents who are closely trailing him. Sam Jackson steals THE MAN from under Levy's nose, with some impressive, snappy dialogue reminiscent of his role as Jules Winnfield in PULP FICTION. Driven to the brink of insanity by the inane banter spewing from Levy's mouth, and a flatulence problem at the other end, Jackson fits into the role like a true pro. The film benefits from an elementary plot that simply allows the laughs to come thick and fast, and evolves only to allow Jackson to display further exasperation at his oblivious partner's behaviour. A cut above the gross-out comedies it will undoubtedly be compared to, THE MAN is a deliciously silly film that benefits from some strong performances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Side-splittingly funny, 15 Feb 2006

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Samuel L Jackson told Opray that he doesn’t ‘wake up in the morning and think I’m gonna be cool today’ but that’s exactly what he does in this film. Jackson is ATF Agent Derrick Vann, an agent being investigated by internal affairs who believe he was involved in the same scheme that got his crooked partner shot. To clear his name and find who killed his partner Vann aims to pose as a gun buyer and sets up a meet in a local diner. But a case of mistaken identity careens Andy Fidler (Eugene Levy) into the middle of Vanns investigation.

It’s a clichéd part but Samuel L Jackson plays the part of the tough Detroit ATF Agent to a tee. Eugene Levy is hysterical by playing a character much like that of Jim’s Dad in American Pie.

If you’re looking for a good laugh this is the film for you. It won’t win any Oscars but it’ll crack you up!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Man, 24 Mar 2007
hi, this is absolutly hilarious. some real witty humour. samuel jackson is on the way to bust an illegal weapons seller when a complete idiot gets caught up in the middle of it and now he has to stay with jackson till the end of the bust. it also has some well filmed action sequences but is a comedy. a great film you won't regret. it is not a cheesy comedy. thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, 2 Aug 2006
By Bazzer "Adam" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

The story is a little strange and the characters sometimes rather annoying but what the heck, it's hollywood and this isn't a bad film. Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy are both very clever actors and although this isn't one of their best films they do work well together and there are some funny moments and witty lines. There's no big explosions, no big, bloodthirsty violent scenes but just an entertaining film that will have you chuckling throughout.
