This is the film that started my teenage obsession with all things Lon Chaney, and probably fostered a general interest with films of his period for a lot of people. I had no idea at the time of what he even looked like, and was a bit disappointed when I found little resemblance to James Cagney. From a time when Hollywood 'biops' were popular this was pretty typical, romanticised and rather like a soap opera, but Cagney is as riveting as ever, and puts over the essence of the man. Good to see a decent DVD of this movie, dump any previous bootlegs you may have come across.
