Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Having managed to adjust the path of her career past the restrictive but positive stigma of album one Raw Like Sushi, Neneh Cherry delivers an album which musically and lyrically suggests a coming of age. Balancing out the content with a few directional turns, it spans a range of styles from pop ballads--with charming piano melodies, like "Feel It" and "Troubleman"--switching towards slightly misguided but tougher rock-influenced tracks--like the lyrically sensuous "Hornbeam". With a number of popular singles, including the hugely successful "7 Seconds"--featuring Yossou N'Dour--and the James Brown retort "Woman", there are a number of instantly recognisable moments. It is within the shuddering strings and Massive Attack-esque beats of "Carry Me", however, that her voice is most at home. The result is a frustrating album that never quite decides who or what it wants to be. --Found Sounds

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, 1 Aug 2002
I've had this album for a long time. I don't remember when I bought it exactly or why but I'm glad I did. It's one of only a small handful of albums which sits consistantly at the front of my rack and gets played often - and that's how it's been ever since I bought it.

It's an album of many moods but overall, I find it relaxing. It's an album to be listened to, but can also be used as background music. It just works, whatever you do with it.

Go get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars an average effort, 16 Oct 2000
By A Customer
"Man" is the latest album by Neneh Cherry who once again turns her back on the style of music that she has released in the past, turning away from the house based sound of her first album and the urban based sound of her second album to a more trip hop meets rock sound, a style which is poignantly echoed on the tones of the album's hit single, the brilliant track "Woman" (a track that Portishead or Massive Attack would be proud to have in their repertoire). Although the generally nature of the album is trip hop, the album also includes her huge duet with Yossou N Dour on the brilliant "Seven Seconds" which is world music meets r and b. To highlight the trip hop nature of the album she also collaborates with Tricky on "Everything" and just to change the mood again the album also includes the rock based track "Kootchi". Overall it's an album with a diverse sound base, but Neneh takes strides forward with her passionate vocals which have her in "diva" league as opposed to the more rap based style of her debut album. Although it's not her most consistent album, its definitely her most creative and is well worth the time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly my favourite album ever, 19 Feb 2006
By MikeH (London town) - See all my reviews
I have listened to this album so many hundreds of times that I don't know where to start. This is one of the very few albums I have heard that successfully combines elements of soul, hip hop and sampling without being a slave to any style, and the result is a fluid, passionate 40 minutes of joy. "Everything" is a beautiful and simple love song, and bookends the album along with "Woman", a delicate and yet powerful celebration of the many sides of a woman.

Neneh Cherry has one of the most distinctive voices of recent years, and happily the album has not been subjected to too much over-production. This album is heartfelt, real, soulful, joyous, loving and incredibly uplifting. This is real emotion, complex and sometimes not always understood, but light years away from some of the more fashionable chest beating and self-flagelation that has become popular in recent years. You should have this album in your life - you will feel better for it, and each listen will seem as fresh as the first.
