Much better than reviews suggest,

Having always paid heed to the views of movie critics like Mssrs Halliwell and Maltin I bought the James Mason boxset thinking that MAN IN GREY would be one of the weaker of the five films in it. Well, I must say I was astonished by the quality of its direction, acting, screenplay, and photography. Admittedly it is not at the sublime level of ODD MAN OUT, possibly also not quite as well crafted as FIVE FINGERS but it is a very good film in its own right. Mason came into the public eye with this movie and you can see why... but the performances of Phyllis Calvert and Stewart Granger are just as worthy of praise -- which says a lot, because they portray "good" which is much more difficult to convey convincingly than the "evil" embodied by Mason and, in particular, Margaret Lockwood. I am very happy to own a copy of this film - it has certainly surpassed my expectations!

I love this film, it came out when I was in my teens many years ago, I loved all Gainsborough Studios films and Margaret Lockwood was wonderful, also James Mason although in his autobiography he does'nt rate this one very much.
They dont make films like this anymore, more's the pity.
