Black man marries white woman. Black man wants to do the right thing and genuinely loves his wife. Black man is a loser but perseveres and does all right by himself and his wife. I got over half way through this book (winner of the IMPAC award) but found it to be over-written and slightly pretentious, what with quotations from T.S. Eliot and a host of others. I'd love to be able to say that I thought this was a worthy winner of the award but it seems like a bit of a blip to me.
Worthy but dull, I'm afraid. And I'm disappointed to say that because I was looking forward to reading this.
