4.0 out of 5 stars The Man With The Golden Gun OST - Entertaining and fun score from John Barry, 10 Sep 2010
By

This review is from: The Man With The Golden Gun (Audio CD)
The Man With The Golden Gun has long been a favourite Bond film of mine, as it takes time to explore the character of the main villain. But it also has a sense of fun, which is helped aling by John Barry's entertaining soundtrack.

The opening theme, with some of the most innuendo laden lyrics I have ever heard, is pleasingly belted out by Lulu. Then there are a set of tracks where Barry rearranges the theme into various guises, with the `20s jazz stylings being my favourite. There are also the usual big action themes, especially `Let's go Get Em', from the famous car chase. This is possibly the only Bond soundtrack to include a swanee whistle.

The soundtrack has been nicely restored and sounds pretty good in this edition. There is a short booklet with stills from the film adn an essay about the film and the music. A very good presentation.

In all, not Barry's greatest score, but certainly the one with the most sense of fun. Four stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barry's worst Bond score, 29 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Man With The Golden Gun (Audio CD)
"The man with the golden gun" is largely regarded by critics and Barry fans alike as being the worst score in his long tenure as a Bond composer. Due to other commitments Barry only had 3 weeks to write and record the score for the film and after listening to it it's very easy to see that Barry just didn't have the time or commitment to really give this the full attention it deserved. After 2 stellar score previous to this for both "OHMSS" and "Diamonds are forever" ( 2 of Barry's best scores by the way !) this come as a crushing disappointment. The theme tune sung by Lulu isn't too bad and get's things off to a good start, whilst hardly a Bond classic, the general pace of the track couple with the familiar Bond horn stabs make's it at least interesting if nothing else. After that things get decidedly worse. One of the few criticisms of Barry's work is his penchant for repetitiveness of the main theme in his scores, never has this been more true than this score as the main theme is regurgitated in some form or another in almost every cue! Main version of the theme, slow version of the theme, jazz version of the theme..the list goes on! This is by far Barry's laziest work, not just in a Bond score but in all the scores of his i've heard. There are a couple of highlights however! ( Well this is John Barry, it couldn't be completely bad could it!) "Hips trip" is a nice suspense cue and "In search of scramanga's island" is another dark and brooding suspense track, so typical of his style in Bond films. The main title song also gets another airing ( i've lost count now!) at the end but the arrangement is slightly different with some different lyrics referencing james bond himself! This is only the 2nd Bond score to feature a different version of the theme song at the end, the other being the disco version of the "Moonraker" theme at the end of that film.

Overall "The man with the golden gun's" score ranks as the worst of Barry's Bond work and possibly his least interesting score overall of all his film work with very few memorable motifs (if any!) and a highly repetitive use of the main theme. Still compared to most of today's shockingly dull scores it looks like a work of art but by Barry's high standards this must rank as a dissapointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Barry at his best, 27 Nov 2009

This review is from: The Man With The Golden Gun (Audio CD)
John Barry pulls out the stops again to produce this atmospheric yet light soundtrack. Unlike many other soundtracks, this one is good to simply listen to, and you don't have to know that 'this is the scene where thingy does wotsit' to appreciate the nuances. It's entrenched in its era, but for nostalgia and simply easy listening, this one is a good choice.
