This book is a surprising page turner. I've read a lot of academic texts, or at least tried to, most are impenetrable at best and unreadable at worst. Not so Man on Earth. It's a fascinating insight into human culture highlighting how many isolated cultures evolved due to inherited customs from early settlers along side climatic conditions and food supplies. A real must read for anyone interested in people and what makes us all tick.

If you are interested in natural history and how societies and cultures develop then you should definitely be reading books by John Reader. He writes in a clear way that includes all the detail you could ever want, but it is never dull.

Great insight into civilization 14 May 2010
By Matthew R. Bieker - Published on Amazon.com

I can't recommend this book enough. I purchased it because I read an interesting article which referenced it, and when I saw the price on Amazon, I thought "why not?" I'm very glad I did, because this is an incredibly provocative book. It provides vast amounts of information and insight into human civilizations of all sorts, all around the world. It will keep you thinking for quite some time after you read it, and will leave you with an enriched perspective on all sorts of matters having to do with human cultures and the interactions between and among them.

I ran into this book because both Douglas Adams and Richard Dawkins recommended it highly. It is fantastic! I went out of my way to rent it at a library, since it was not on kindle, and I just ordered three copies, one for myself and two for christmas presents.

Great book on the many diverse cultures that develop in isolation. If you are interested in the way common ideas and beliefs originate then this is the book for you.
