Book Description

13 Sep 2007 Mammoth Books
Over 25 short story masterpieces from writers such as Louis de Bernieres and Ian Rankin - modern literary tales to chill the blood. This spine-chilling new anthology of 20th and 21st century tales by big name writers is in the best traditions of literary ghost stories. It is just a little over a hundred years ago that the most famous literary ghost story, "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James, was published and in the intervening years a great many other distinguished writers have tried their hand at this popular genre - some basing their fictional tales on real supernatural experiences of their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars haunting selection 3 Dec 2007
By Dr. Robert A. Josey VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
A first-rate collection of ghost stories - ideal for this time of year.

The reason I give it 4 stars is that I wasn't too happy about the way the stories were introduced. It's good to have the bios of the authors involved. Even giving away the settings and dates of the stories was fine. But to present an italicised extract specifying the type of ghost in each one genuinely annoyed me. It was like a spoiler and I had to cover the top of each story so I wouldn't know what was around the corner.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good collection 29 Dec 2008
By R. Bull
Format:Paperback
This is a thoroughly good read. A number of the stories are genuinely shocking- J.B.Priestley's story about the man trapped in an Underground train is brilliant, as is the one from Philip Pullman.
I agree that the synopsis at the front is a bit annoying, but I enjoyed the details provided about the author, which are helpful for further study.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eerily good 9 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
A great and extensive collection of stories, well organised by style and including several contemporary stories to match classics from the like of M R James. Perfect for cold autumn nights, shivering by the fire. The only negative I'd note is that also noted by the other reviewers. Having a paragraph at the start of the story detailing either the ghost or a particularly spine-tingling moment from the story really adds nothing to the enjoyment of them, and actively detracts.

4.0 out of 5 stars The mammoth book of modern ghost stories
A very good read and so many stories by so many different authors. Not so many creepy ones, but short stories that make you think.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book 12
This is an encore-type book. Very few of those I've bought recently can be similarly described. It also has plenty - if repeated - stories in it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly not modern
As other reviewers have noted, there are very few "modern" stories in this collection, unless you count anything written in the last 110 years to be modern. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that Modern. I guess all ghosts are old
Most of the stories in this volume are decades old. I'm almost 50 and most of them are older than me. I was expecting Modern to mean at least post 1970. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Typical Peter Haining.
Sadly, this is another Peter Haining opus, another one of his "cashing in on the backs of other authors" tomes. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
Just a short note to point out that there is nothing from Ian Rankin in this volume. Plenty of other good stuff though!

5.0 out of 5 stars The curious note that we found
Among his papers we discovered the following notes - all the more curious because he had been the picture of health the last time we had met. Read more
