Review

'I found it excellent... It strikes the right note and captures what we can imagine about the spirit of the times. I really enjoyed it!' --Jean Clottes, French pre-historian

Product Description

It’s around 15,000–12,000 BC, the Late Stone Age, and an orphan boy is surviving on the fringes of a hunters’ camp. A passion to find mammoths has been ignited in him by Old Mother, the ancient crone who guards the camp fire and cares for him. In his travels to find the mammoths, he is adopted by a mysterious hunchback, Agaratz, who lives alone in a cave and is perhaps the last of a vanished people. Urrell learns survival and instinct as a stone-age hunter as well as gaining insight into the meaning of the cave paintings of deer, bison, mammoths and other creatures. The story culminates in a long journey to the Great Meet of the Clan Groups where rites de passage are held in caves, goods traded and mates secured. Time sometimes slips, and when the powers that Agaratz holds are transferred to Urrell, they will be a match for those of the leader of the rites, the horned shaman and his acolytes. But who will win? Mammoth Boy recreates the semi-magical world of the cave paintings seen through the mind of a boy growing into manhood. It was inspired by an archaelogical course in Spain and will appeal to young adults interested in archaeology and recreative pre-historical fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book 5 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
John has given us a wonderful coming-of-age children's adventure set in prehistoric times, which I read with real pleasure, despite my advancing years! A boy, Urrell, growing up in a community where survival depends on hunting and where being an orphan means he is an outsider, becomes obsessed with finding the mystical creatures of story-telling around the fire: the mammoths. His quest takes him away from his village and into strange and scary forests and caves, learning about himself as he experiences magical and life-changing adventures, before he fulfils his destiny. Beautifully, vividly written, this will become a classic. Highly recommended for children of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Filmic material for Spielberg! 25 Oct 2012
By Barny
Format:Paperback
After struggling for the first fifty pages ( my problem with most books) where the scene is set for an epic journey: Urrell starts his trek into manhood as a youth cast into the world of discovery, alone, but for a chance meeting with Agaratz, a clubfoot hunchback who leads Urrell and the reader on a trail of trial and mystical magic in search of the Mammoth through stone age prehistory. The story, inspired by the cave paintings of Altamira, discovered in 1879, offer us an insight into our own search for the supernatural world of belief and disbelief...as we might head to Glastonbury in tribal pursuit at a rock and roll gathering....this original real life 'ROCK' concert offers a love interest with tattoos; a Shaman; roaming opportunist vagabonds and a finality that left me spellbound and a believer in the joy and imagination of this accomplished writer. Surely a script here for Mr Spielberg.

I thought it was pretty predictiable and redundant. I enjoyed the first half but felt there was a lot of repeat experiences. Could be just not my cup of tea!

John Hart needs to revert to what made him an outstanding author. This endeavor is far from being his best work.

This book gave a great deal of insight into the past of humans and how they struggled and gradually adapted to the environment.
