Book Description

23 April 2009 Mammoth Books
Few forms suit SF better than the short novel: long enough to flesh out the details of an alien world or bizarre future society, yet short enough to pack a punch – powerful, elegant and free of padding. Now, drawing on his benchmark annual series Best New SF, multiple award-winning editor Gardner Dozois selects the 13 finest science fiction novels of the last 20 years. These unmissable tales, collected here for the first time in one volume, include: Robert Silverberg's 'Sailing to Byzantium'. Michael Swanwick's 'Griffin's Egg’. Alastair Reynolds’ Turqouise Days’. James Patrick Kelly's 'Mr. Boy'. Ursula K. Le Guin 'Forgiveness Day'. Greg Egan’s 'Oceanic’.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent collection 5 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
This collection contains excellent sci-fi novellas by Robert Silverberg,Joe Haldeman,James Patrick Kelly,Nancy Kress,Michael Swanwick and Frederik Pohl. It helps steer the reader towards the writers' other works to see if they are equally enjoyable.
The only drawback for me was the inclusion of what I perceive to be Science Fantasy, of which I am not a fan. I recommend this book highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Promises a lot, and keeps its promises 3 Oct 2012
By Runmentionable TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Gardner Dozois is the most acclaimed editor in modern SF, so when he pulls together what he claims are the best short SF novels from the mid-eighties to the mid-noughties, you can rest assured that's what you're getting. This is a huge collection of the best the genre has to offer, covering a wide range of styles, themes and subject material, and immense value for money.

Many of the stories are recognised classics. You probably won't like all of them, that being the nature of anthologies, and my favourites almost certainly won't be yours, that also being the nature of anthologies, so I won't go into details. That said, hats off in particular to Joe Haldeman's "The Hemingway Hoax", which effectively combines a solid SF premise with srong characterisation to make a moving and poignant point that almost certainly couldn't be done in mainstream fiction. It's rather like what Phil Dick might have written had he not been crazy.

All in all, this book is an excellent, hugely economical way to get hold of the best of the best, and if you don't have very strong feelings for at least half of the stories in here, well, modern SF just isn't for you at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mammoth Book of the Best Short SF Novels 9 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
This book was a present for my son-in-law Thom who is 28 and reads science fiction. I picked it because of the Short SF Novels description in the title. It was a good choice. Thom laughed and his eyes lit up when he saw the title BEST SF NOVELS (Mammoth Books)!
