5.0 out of 5 stars simple texas hold 'em advice, 5 Jun 2008
By Gareth Hughes (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
well, it's a book on texas hold 'em, not poker generally although a few variations are mentioned. however, it is so clear it is impossible not to improve just by leafing through it. i play online quite a bit, and just the online section is worth the price. from lacking confidence and losing a little, I'm feeling much more like I can win - and you know what?I AM winning.
mendelsons style is uber-friendly and such a relief from the ego-filled ranting of online advice columns and poker-star written vanity projects. i guess this isn't for pros but for me, its great - proof is i've won twenty times the price in the last 3 days.

cheers

gareth

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly Fantastic Book On No Limit Poker. & Selling at A Most Attractive Price. A Must Have!, 11 May 2009
By Mr. T. White (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Frankly, my buying this book was a "do I or don't I" decision. I must admit that I was sceptical about whether this book could be good given its many pages and its comparatively low price. So... what do I think now, several weeks after purchase?

As a guide to Texas Holdem, its instruction is up there with the best of them and unbeaten for its price. Mendelson has done brilliant work in fitting so much information and guidance into this book's four hundred odd pages. I've read enough poker literature to know that the book's author has capitalised masterfully upon his experience, in writing a book of this sort, and he has not just written it well: It is quite superb as a guide to Texas Holdem. Albeit, one caveat - don't buy this book expecting to read much on other variants of poker.

Each chapter sets out strategies for success and then examines pitfalls with particular example being given to sample hands and how they might be played. Then at the end of most chapters is a concise summary of what's gone before just in case you weren't paying full attention! Much of the advice given is written in a very friendly and frank manner drawing greatly from the author's long experience in playing poker professionally, which lends greatly to the book's appeal as an easy read.

So, who should buy this book?

I would think that this book would be most useful for intermediate and advanced players who want to sharpen and bring their game up to the next level. Although complete beginners would find much of brilliance in this book, they should buy another book which is more basic in its instruction as well. Experts could probably sidestep this and concentrate on Harrington's series as well as Sklansky's books Tournament Poker: for Advanced Playersas well as books specifically on odds and probabilities such as Texas Hold'em Odds And Probabilities: Limit, No-limit, And Tournament Strategies

For my level of experience, I give it a definite full marks. And I hope you'll agree with me should you buy this book too.

Lastly, I very much hope my review was helpful to you, and I'd be delighted to read your comments on it. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beginners bible., 14 Aug 2008
By Mr. S. Ryan "Scotty2hotty" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book about 2 weeks ago as a slightly naieve no-limit hold em player, and can quite honestly say my skill level has improved significantly. For a beginner this book could be invaluable, and a good place to start for those who want to start playing poker more seriously.
