Product Description

You couldn't make it up: incredible real-life criminal casesA fascinating A-Z of murderous crimes which spans the globe and the centuries in uncovering the extremes of human criminality in all its strangeness. This collection of unusual, if not sensational, murder cases recalls strange crimes of the past and offers insights into particularly macabre and shocking modern murders. Many of the cases also shed light on advances in crime detection, law enforcement and forensic science. Cases include: Krystian Bala, the Polish writer who killed a rival, and then used the murder as the plot for a novel; Alexander Pichuskin, who was stopped one short of killing the 64 victims he needed to 'fill a chess board'; John Lee, 'the man they could not hang' who survived three attempts to execute him; and Adelaide Bartlett, who was accused of killing her husband with chloroform, but was acquitted because no one could work out how she had done it - and she wouldn't say.

About the Author

Robin Odell was born in Hampshire in 1935. After training as a laboratory technician and developing an interest in forensic science, he turned to crime writing as a pastime. In a writing career spanning over forty years, he has written or co-written eighteen books in the fields of true crime, forensic investigation and criminal histoy. He won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1980 for The Murderers’ Who’s Who and again in 2007 for Ripperology. He also lectures extensively to clubs and societies on crime cases.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing 5 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book gives very brief information about a multiplicity of murders, and whilst interesting, it tries to do too much in too short a space of time allowing a page or at most two or three for each crime. If you are looking for bare outlines this is the book for you, but I would prefer slightly more information and less cases.

1.0 out of 5 stars Single star simply for the price 11 July 2014
By Rebecca
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you're interested in this type of book it's probably worth reading simply because of the price. Otherwise not great; unbelievably short chapters and nothing 'bizarre' about most of the cases included. Very disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Chapters are too short 10 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As other reviewers have pointed out, the chapters of this book are simply too short to get any depth whatsoever and I tend to finish one without realising what I have just read. I was expecting the chapters to be short, but this book doesn't offer enough detail to hold my attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book but not bizarre 30 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an amazing record of different types of crime. Whilst they're all accounts of heinous crimes, in my opinion the cases outlined are not bizarre. Even so, an essential read for any reader interested in true crime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do not get any ideas here 8 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When either reading or watching serious crime on television I am always curious to discover where the methods used in the story line come from. For just that reason alone this ebook was a winner for me. I do not normally write with murder in mind, although I have been tempted before now to consider methods. This ebook fits the bill nicely.
I do recommend it for the serious students amongst us.
