Stunning 19 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
Not only does this book hold a wealth of information impossible to find elsewhere, it is also accompanied by beautiful photos.
The detail on the fauna of the Moluccas is better than anything one could find for any other, actually far less remote region of Indonesia. Every bit as good as the book on the Mammals of New Guinea by this author.

This is the definitive guide to the mammals of the South West Pacific extending as far east as the cook islands. It contains comprehensive information for each of the species and in most cases this is coupled with great photos for their identification. Distribution maps are also present however these appear lacking as they are mainly based on museum specimen records. It may be a more of a reflection on the lack of data for the areas fauna than the authors research! In short the bible for anyone contemplating mammal research in the South West Pacific and coupled with its sister title - the mammals of new guinea provides a comprehensive account of the mammalian fauna of the region.

Comprehensive book on fascinating area. 25 Jun 2001
By Jodi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Absolutely fascinating book by well known mammalogist Tim Flannery. In the same series as "The mammals of Australia" by Strahan and "Mammals of New Guinea" by Tim Flannery, and equally as well laid out. Sections of the book are divided into families such as muridae (rats), phalangeridae (possums) and pteropodidae (fruit bats). Each species description includes a colour photograph, along with most available information on the species (many species are relatively unstudied. Overall, this book is a wonderful insight into the mammal fauna of this area, and I highly recommend it for any mammalogist or interested individual.

excellent review 28 Dec 2010

This book is an excellent reference book/review of the mammal species of the South-West Pacific and Moluccan Islands. The majority of the mammal species in this region of the world are bats. This book gives some information on the many bat species but also on bandicoots, shrews, rats, wallabies, cucus, gliders, and other mammals.
