I am thrilled to say that I have finally found what will be my "go-to" guide for North American mammal identification. This book does a fantastic job identifying all 442 mammal species of North America. Some of the more helpful features: a quick guide to point you to the right section of the book, fantastic artwork (not distracting photos) to reference, information on identifying the tracks of some of the larger species, and of course, most helpful to an amateur like me, there are plenty of pictures of scat!! And yet I am pleased to report that this beautiful reference does it all in a classic field guide size! For any interested amateur naturalist, hiker, hunter, etc - it will become the obvious choice to pack up and take along.

This is a superb field guide, with all that is needed. The coverage is comprehensive, the colour plates excellent, and range maps etc provide all the details needed for anyone from the interetsed naturalist to professionals. I recomend it to anyone.

Took this on my recent trip to Utah and Wyoming as a complement to the (also excellent) Sibley bird guide. The coverage is really good with top quality illustrations. The layout was also spot on with the text and distribution maps on the page opposite the relevant picture. It's small enough to carry around but still comprehensive in its coverage. Highly recommended.

This is the must-have book for anyone who wants to identify mammals they encounter north of the Mexican border, in both the USA and Canada. It's a comprehensive and authoritative work so it good for advanced mammal watchers and biologists. But it is equally good for beginner and novice mammal watchers even if you just want to identify the chipmunk in your back yard or learn more about the antelope you see on your road trip to Wyoming. What's excellent about the book is its very compact size, meaning you can carry it around with you and hardly notice it - yet it is packed with excellent plates and informative text. It's a very well laid-out book. The book has a lot of bonus features such as track and scat ID, whale and dolphin dive sequences and a lot more.
