Product Description

Product Description

The Handbook of British Mammals is a well established classic reference source for all aspects of information on the mammals occuring in Britain and Ireland, but it has always covered all of the British Isles, hence the subtle change of title; the Isle of Man and Channel Isles are overtly included. The 3rd edition, dating from 1991, has long been out of print, and has become increasingly out of date as well. Over 100 of the leading mammalogists, mostly members of The Mammal Society, have contributed to this revision. It presents an authoritative summary of our current knowledge for all who need it: not only students and academics, but also planners, conservationists and naturalists. It is also a substantial but analytical source of the literature for those who wish to read further. It benefits from a superb collection of colour plates, especially commissioned from Guy Troughton, some excellent colour photographs of mammal behaviour, and a range of new maps and diagrams. Having collaborated with Blackwell Scientific Publications for the previous 3 editions, The Mammal Society is publishing this 4th edition itself.

From the Publisher

The Mammal Society works to protect British mammals, halt the decline of threatened species and advise on all issues affecting British mammals. We study mammals, identify the problems they face and promote conservation and other policies based on sound science.

If you want authoritative, up to date information on British mammals this is the book to provide it. Not a light read in any sense but at virtually 800 pages you certainly get your money's worth. Each species has an individual account covering identification, signs and distribution as well as biology and behaviour. There are also comparative tables for some groups, for example to show the conservation status of whales and dolphins, echolocation calls of bats and bat identification in the hand. Well illustrated with drawings of several species to a page (to aid identification) as well as photographs to show behaviour together with drawings of the skulls of most species.

This is a reference work, not an easy read. It summarises knowledge of each species found in these islands (Ireland, Man, Channel Isles as well as GB), and cites the literature needed to supply this information. The authors (118 of them) are all experts on their species. Good quality paper allows full colour presentation of plates and photographs; skulls and teeth are depicted in monochrome. Three introductory chapters discuss the balance of the mammal fauna, its fossil history, and the relevant laws covering wild mammals, but most of the book (740 of 800 pages) is devoted to the systematic accounts. A bit pricy, perhaps, but very good value for money.

mammal "handbook" 6 May 2012

Superb detail and clearly organised - but the handbook in the title could be misleading as this is a weighty tome and certainly not something that you would carry round in your handbag to dip into! An excellent referenced resource, with useful illustrations too.
