Product Description

Feelgood blockbuster adaptation of the smash-hit stage musical, with Meryl Streep finding love the second time around on the Greek isles. After reading her mother Donna (Streep)'s diary, soon-to-be-wed Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) invites three of her mother's old flames, Bill (Stellan Skarsgard), Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and Harry (Colin Firth) to the wedding, in the hope of finding out who her real father is. Arriving on the sun-drenched Mediterranean island for the first time in 20 years, the now middle-aged hunks soon rekindle long dormant emotions, causing Donna to revisit her past glories, and, with the help of her two oldest friends, Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), belt out all those Abba hits with the exuberance of a spring chicken.

From Amazon.co.uk

The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

My wife and I went to see this last week not sure what to expect and we came away really impressed. Objectively, it's a very well crafted film. The songs are used to great effect throughout in reflecting events and building the emotion of the storyline. The particular sequence just before the wedding is an unexpected series of emotional body-blows: I defy anyone with grown-up kids to resist empathising with the feelings being portrayed on screen. It certainly caught me out - middle-aged guy speaking - and my wife (along with numerous others) shed a tear. Streep in particular is wonderfully adept at bringing the lyrics to life. I found myself thinking anew about the meaning of lines from songs I've heard and sung along to many, many times before.

Looked at coldly, without knowing details of their musical 'credentials', the cast list is an unusual combination, but there's no doubt that this particular recipe works terrifically well on screen. To those who criticise Brosnan's singing - I think you've missed the point. This is not just a standard 'musical'. The guys, it seems to me, were chosen mainly for what they could bring to the roles as actors, not as lead singers. At no point before seeing the film was I expecting to be blown away by the guys singing, and at no point during the film did I feel disappointed by it either. Their singing is a delightful facet of their broader characters and far from detracting from the value of the film as a musical, actually makes it so much more enjoyable.

To sum up, I went to see it in ambivalent state of mind, fully prepared to come away with a so-so opinion of it. I have to admit Mamma Mia won me over, and as a result, for the first time in 30 years, we've been to see a film twice. It's an optimistic, life-affirming movie. The cynics can pull it to bits if they please, but the sheer, uncomplicated happiness it gives to the vast majority who've see it - including us - speaks volumes.

I loved ABBA when I was a little girl and when I heard that Mamma Mia was the top-selling movie of 2008, I had to see what the fuss is about. It's about a young girl sending letters to three hopeful fathers so she can find out which one is the right one to give her away to her wedding. The singing and dancing is high in this, the actors using their unknown voices to feel happiness, sadness, raw emotion and feel-good numbers. Meryl Streep was brilliant, the three fathers (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Sarkgard) wern't the best singers of the world but they looked like they were having fun to care about it. Kids and adults should like and love this movie, nothing really harmful in it at all and there's even a singalong feature so you can do it without anyone hearing your voice! It's strongly recommended to see it, it might not be for everyone's taste but it is to me and I enjoyed every second like it was magic. A brilliant romantic musical, go and get it so you can enjoy the beautiful setting and the damn amazing songs to tap your feet to!

When I saw the Mama Mia film I was certainly NOT disappointed! It was abolsutely brilliant. It had been classed as a "feel good happy film" and it was just that. Abba, of course, are the true singers of all their hits, but the cast did a splendid job with all the songs. It made me happy, sad, weepy, joyful. It takes a good comedian to make me laugh and laugh I did with the good comedy involved.

I have already ordered the Mama Mia DVD on-line for end of November and I know I will play it many many times. I felt so happy when I left the cinema. I can't understand the negative comments of reviewers but wholeheartedly agree with all the other reviewers' brilliant comments. I think the words of the songs were linked well with the story and the cast were top-notch in their individual parts.

Of course, the Greek beautiful island of Skopelos was amazing. Tourists will have already flocked there. I could just imagine myself being there, taking in the breath-taking beauty of the island and taking movie and camera clips. I have enjoyed listening to the Mama Mia soundtrack too.

First a short summary. This film is a musical that uses the songs of Abba as a backdrop to a story about a girl who invites 3 men, one of whom is her father, to her wedding on a Greek island. She doesn't tell her mother this so needless to say much fun ensues before the inevitable happy ending.
How could it fail? Thankfully it doesn't!

I hadn't seen the stage musical but that really doesn't matter as the film is very good on it's own merits.
The excellent supporting including Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard are all obviously having a ball. Perhaps the least said about some of their singing and dancing abilities the better!

The film is comedic most of the time though there are a few moving moments, especially a few dealing with the mother-daughter relationship.

I'll make one point that really struck me during the film. Given the bright and breezy nature of the story I found Meryl Streep's performance very intense. It wasn't like watching her in "Sophie's Choice" but she seemed to emphasise the regrets and sadness her character had about her life and parenting skills. I must add that this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film, as it is never long before the next dance routine came up!

So if you want to have a laugh and sing along to Abba (if only to yourself) go and see Mamma Mia.
