Mama Don't Like Ugly takes readers on a journey of Dana Calhoun's life growing up in Nautica, Louisiana - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Her Mama, a young light-skinned pharmacist, holds the title as her number one hater, all because she dislikes her dark skin. Regardless of her unconditional love for her Mama, she encounters a cycle of torment. When Mama bathes Dana, she tries to scald her with hot water. She neglects her to the point where she is malnourished. She tosses her around like a doll. Out of shame, she relaxes her hair two days in row. She watches a pedophile grab her. She steals money from her just to prove a point. Once Dana challenges her, she finds Mama's hands wrapped around her neck - praying that she does not die. These snapshots of Dana's life give insight into the abuse and neglect that she endures growing up. Still, she longs for her Mama's acceptance before she goes off to college. Will Mama finally realize that Dana is a beautiful person in spite of her dark skin or will she spew those hateful words, "Mama Don't Like Ugly!"

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money..., it's not worth it 14 Dec 2011

I don't even know where to start my review of this book. The most concise accurate thing I should state is that this book was an absolute waste of time. I usually don't write reviews of any products, but in this case I had to make an exception to perhaps spare someone else the agony of this poorly written book. The characters are flat and never develop. They are either Cinderella like the heroine, Dana, or the Wicked Witch, like Dana's mother. Good luck identifying any semblance of a plot within this book. It's just not there. This would have been better perhaps as a short story. In regards to editing (Kindle Edition), it was simply put atrocious, Good Grief!!!!!! The editor or whoever attempted to edit this book needs to sue the school district they graduated from because even a high shcool student should have caught the numerous misspellings, dropped words, wrong tense, fragments, etc., that are liberally scattered throughout this book. On practically every other page, the reader has to try and deduce what the author was really trying to say, which I must reiterate was a whole lot of nothing. In closing, maybe this work should be cleaned up significantly and then marketed to young adults or teenagers who might prefer an easy read. There are probably comic books with more substance than this fictional work. I really wanted to like this book as the subject matter interested me, but it was a complete and total disappointment. I am beyond stunned that this book received any 3 star, let alone 4 or 5 star ratings. I have a hard time believing that anyone who read this could truly have enjoyed this book.

This was my first read by the author and I must say I was really impressed! Dana narrate us through the book from infancy to the age of 18, she explains to us the abuse and neglect she faces by her family, especially her mother, all b/c she's dark skin. Go on this tearful journey with Dana. You'll find yourself angry and in tears.

4.0 out of 5 stars SMH at that lady called "Mama" 3 Feb 2012

This was a very quick read that captured my attention right from the beginning.I was so caught up in this story that it only took me a few hours to read it. I couldnt believe the physical, mental and verbal abuse that Dana was put through by her own mother...all because of the color of her skin. Her mom was horrible and I was so in shock that she would treat her own child that way. I was really hoping that Dana would go off on her mom and just let her know exactly how she felt..but she never did.Her mom did everything in her power to break her spirit since birth but she didnt succeed. Dana still found it in her heart to love and forgive her mother and in the end she was the one who came out on top! I really enjoyed this story and the character Dana left quite an impression on me and I wouldnt mind reading more about her.
