Varied Scenery on a densely populated island!!!,
This review is from: Malta, Gozo and Comino (Landscapes) (Paperback)
The Maltese islands have a great deal to offer to the visitor. Apart from the sun and the beaches it is very rich in history and culture. Although Malta is densely populated it still offers the rambler a great deal of walking. This book takes the reader to explore the hidden charms that are often ignored by most tourists. The best walks described in the book are those on the west coast i.e. from Wied iz-Zurrieq to Mellieha, where the cliff scenery is breathtaking. Also the sister island of Gozo is a walkers' paradise and the walks described here are awesome. Comino is the 'away-from-it-all' island and the walk described here takes you to its blue lagoon, cliffs, offshore islets and an imposing tower. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who visits Malta.

Well up to standard,

Back in the early 90's I bought the Sunflower guide to Mallorca. It did its job so well that I have bought titles from the series ever since, for instance Madeira, the Picos, Provence, Turkey and most recently, Malta. They are a convenient size and shape for carrying in a pocket, are strongly put together, and the shiny paper resists sweaty fingers.
The detailed car tours are pleasant, but I buy them for the walks. I like the fact that each walk has several variants, so you can always find something within the capabilities of your party and the transport you favour. Directions for finding the start of the walk are usually clear and reliable. Directions during the walk are seldom ambiguous or vague, and the cumulative timings given are an excellent idea, and I have found these very accurate and helpful. The maps are good too. You don't need anything else. The Malta guide was well up to standard. We did ten of the walks in a fortnight, using the excellent bus service to access the walks. The walks were very varied and enjoyable. We went in the second half of May, and the temperature was delightful.

Excellent for a walking holiday,

We have visited Malta twice in the last couple of years and, as those who enjoy walking, we have found this book invaluable. There are walks of all shapes and sizes from gentle strolls to one or two long hard walks (one in particular on Gozo). The landscape in Malta is such that paths are often very difficult to follow but the guidance given for each walk is clear and precise (only once have we gone badly astray and as we backtracked we could see where we made our mistake). Obviously you need to have the most up to date version with you as things do change. Malta is a country that you need to see 'up close' to really appreciate and this guide really enables you to do that. It is especially useful that there are a number of walks on Gozo included as well as a circular walk around Comino starting from the Blue Lagoon(well worth doing). One of our favourite walks begins from Mellieha Bay and, via the 'Popeye' set (a bit out of place if you ask me!) finishes at Golden Bay. You don't even need to walk back as the bus will take you from there to Mosta from where you can get a bus back to Mellieha. We have never hired a car on our visits to Malta and it has never been a problem to get the bus to where the walk begins; the guide includes details of which buses you need to catch (do be aware that if you want to go from one end of the island to the other on the bus it will take some time!).
