By Ned Middleton HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The New Holland series of dive guides have a well-established format and on this occasion Lawson and Lesley Wood have used that format to good effect. As the author of the Maltese Islands Diving Guide (the very first diving guide to Malta), I was unsure as to whether I should review this title or not - but having been sent a complimentary copy, it would have been churlish to ignore the book altogether.

Lawson Wood enjoys a much deserved fine reputation as an underwater photo-journalist and author and with the aid of his wife has produced yet another excellent product.

After the customary "How to use this book" (and explanation of the abbreviations and symbols used throughout), we have an introduction to the country which includes information on most topics the visitor wants to know followed by an equally informative introduction to the diving one can expect to find.

Then we get down to specifics. The next chapter details no fewer than 38 dive sites found around the coast of Malta. This is followed by chapters on Comino (13 dive sites) and Gozo (30 dive sites) giving a total of 81 sites altogether. The information on each site is brief and to the point with as many as 4 complete dive sites appearing on a single page.

Each of these chapters in interrupted with green pages on different subjects. These are a complete change of topic in the middle of whatever you were reading. These "breaks" include subjects like the Seahorse, the Hermit Crab, WW2 Wrecks, the Great White Shark and contain detailed information you might not necessarily bother to learn from elsewhere..

Finishing off with section on the marine environment, underwater photography & video and health and safety, it would seem that just about all the information the visiting diver needs to consider before and during a trip to the Maltese Islands is here and, when compared to other books which have recently appeared this is a good option.

I found this book to be well written and presented. It proved to be a useful guide to Malta and Gozo in general, but was somewhat lacking in details of the actual dive sites. More details on how to find the sites and how to navigate them would make this an excellent diving guide.

Could do better 4 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
This is an OK dive book on Malta to supplement a diving trip if you are going guided diving with a dive shop. If you want to go out on your own/ with your dive club this book is missing sufficient information on the location of the sites and entry points.
This is not a patch on Scuba Diving - Malta, Gozo, Comino by Peter G Lemon
ISBN 978 0954178918 which has loads more detail on the sites, illustrations showing the entry points and sea bed to help locate key sites.
