There's a lot of whisky books about. A fair few just list a load of whisky and whack some tasting notes after them, which is great but I'm sure you can make up your own mind when you come to drink them. Some are amazing coffee-table and reference books, with a great deal of information about the distilleries and their history. Looking for a gift? Then I'd go with Dave Broom's Whisky Atlas book. It's got great photos, a lovely layout and reads beautifully. But if you want something with a little more depth, a little more guts, then this is probably the most essential book of them all. It's sections on Whisky history, the actual process of making whisky and tasting whisky are probably the most in-depth of any off-the-shelf book I've read. It's a book that you can begin your whisky journey on and still come back to years after and still rewards with the level of detail and analysis. If you want to know the difference between Islay and Islands this book will tell you. Equally if you want to know what actual chemical compounds are responsible for different aromas and flavours, this will tell you too. If you want in depth tasting notes and extended distillery histories then there are other books and web related sources to look at. If you want to investigate anything other than Scottish Whisky, this book will not help. Otherwise, pretty much essential.

Would warmly recommend this comprehensive, knowledgeable, and wittily written book for budding (and more experienced) connoisseurs of whisky and its long history.
An essential handbook for anyone who wants to find out more about the complexities of Scotland's national drink. And an essential pocket guide for anyone minded to explore the network of Scottish distilleries.

a good description of making and appreciating whisky. But this is only reading because extremely scarse in documentation which makes it a bit poor.
